Maine Maritime to Add Men’s & Women’s Wrestling

0

Maine Maritime Academy, a school of approximately 900 full-time undergraduates in Castine, Maine, has announced the elevation of their club wrestling team to varsity status for the 2024-2025 season. The school plans to hire a head coach who will start this summer to prepare for the transition to varsity status. Maine Maritime has had a club team that competes in the NCWA since 2018 and had 18 wrestlers on the roster last season. The Mariners previously fielded a men’s team from 1967-1979.

Maine Maritime Academy to Elevate Club Wrestling to Varsity Status; Compete in Both Men’s and Women’s Wrestling

CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy announced the addition of men’s and women’s wrestling to its roster of varsity sport offerings. The move was announced by Maine Maritime President Jerry Paul ’89 on Tuesday morning.

Men’s and women’s wrestling is currently a club sport at the Academy, competing in the National Club Wrestling Association (NCWA). The program will continue in the NCWA for one more year before moving to NCAA competition in the 2024-2025 season.

Last season, the club fielded 18 wrestlers, including the Academy’s first female wrestler, Jenna Willard. In the 2021-2022 campaign, the team competed in five regular season Invitationals before qualifying for the NCWA Northeast Conference Championship. At the tournament, six wrestlers qualified for the NCWA National Championship held in Texas, and Willard was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler in the Women’s Division.

Wrestling is part of the sports tradition at the Academy. Maine Maritime fielded a men’s wrestling team from 1967 to 1979. The Academy has five Hall of Fame members that were associated with wrestling, including William J. Mottola, who the Mariners Athletics Hall of Fame is named after. The Mariners restarted wrestling as a club program for the 2018-2019 season.

Maine Maritime will look to hire a coach for each team this spring with a planned start date in July to continue to expand the rosters as the programs transition into varsity sports.

NCAA to vote on DIII season change proposals

0

There are two legislative proposals up for a vote this Saturday at the NCAA Convention in San Antonio that could affect the wrestling season. Keep in mind that the membership could choose not to vote for either of them and instead keep things the way they are. The first proposal would allow coaches to work with their teams more (but only strength & conditioning), while the second proposal would allow for a smaller amount of offseason work that could include wrestling training.

DIII Convention preview: 12 proposals and a few resolutions on the table (ncaa.org)

Proposal 2023-10 would change the DIII season from counting by weeks to counting by days. Sports would have 114 days of athletically related activities that could be used at any point during the school year (with specific prohibitions on out of season activity near final exams). This would allow teams to practice at any time as long as the team has some of the 114 days remaining. However, there is a specific carve out for wrestling that only allows wrestling teams to use days outside of the season for strength and conditioning. In other words, sports other than men’s and women’s wrestling would be able to conduct regular practice sessions at any time while wrestlers could only do strength and conditioning before October 10th and after the NCAA Championships. These activities could be mandatory and could involve the sport coaches in a way they previously could not.

Here is the specific language setting up special restrictions for men’s wrestling:

17.29.2.1 Strength and Conditioning Activities. An institution may conduct strength and conditioning activities but not practice activities beginning the seventh day after the first day of classes and between the completion of the traditional segment and five weekdays before the first day of the final examination for the regular academic year. These days shall count against the 114 day limit.

Proposal 2023-11 also transitions from using weeks to using days, but it limits all winter sports to using just eight of the allowed 114 days outside of the season. There is no specific limitations on wrestling in this proposal. A maximum of three days can be used per week outside of the season in this proposal, and any training has to take place during the academic year.

Here is the section of the proposal outlining how the eight days can be used:

17.1.2.2 Sports with a Winter NCAA Championship. Unless otherwise noted in the applicable sport section, the playing season shall be conducted according to the following:

(2) An institution may use up to eight of the 114 permissible days outside the playing season provided:
(i) The days are not used before the first day of classes;
(ii) The days are not used five weekdays before an exam period through the exam period;
(iii) The days may not be used during the summer vacation period; and
(iv) No more than than three days are used per week.

This second proposal could allow a team to practice 8 times in the fall before October 10th or save some days until the spring in preparation for an event like the US Nationals in April.

d3wrestle.com 2022-2023 Rankings #5

0

It is great that top teams and wrestlers across the country compete with each other in the NWCA National Duals. The tough part is sorting out the rankings afterwards. A bad/hot match or weekend can make it tough to properly place all 26 wrestlers in each weight, but we do the best we can. As always, the Contender and Honorable Mention tiers are in alphabetical order by last name.

In the quarterfinals, he defeated 2022 NCAA qualifier Javen Estrada of North Central 8-3, and in the semifinals, he defeated 2022 149 lbs. All-American Kristian Rumph of Wartburg 4-0. In the finals against Augsburg, Brown bumped up to 157 and defeated 2022 157 lbs. All-American Tyler Shilson 5-4.

MSOE Bus Catches Fire Saturday, None Injured

0

As the MSOE wrestling team traveled back to Milwaukee from the Northwood Duals on Saturday night, the team bus caught fire while the the wrestlers were still nearly 300 miles from home. All aboard safely evacuated, though personal possessions and wrestling gear were lost in the blaze. Some wrestlers left the bus without shoes or coats, according to a parent of a current wrestler. The wrestlers waited in the Barron County Sheriff’s office as a replacement bus was dispatched to finish their journey back to Milwaukee.

The team has canceled a planned Wednesday dual but hopes to be back in action this Saturday at the Al Hanke Invitational at Elmhurst. The school has publicized this link where anyone can donate to help the athletes and team replace items lost in the fire. See below for more information.
