Wrestler of the Week: Gage Pederson

The d3wrestle.com/WWSport.com Wrestler of the Week is Gage Pederson of Olivet. Pederson wrestled 149 for the Comets at the recent Desert Duals in Las Vegas, helping Olivet to a 3-1 record and winning all four of his bouts. In the opening match, he was the only victor for the Comets against #1 Wartburg, and his 8-6 win came against defending 141 lb. NCAA Champion Kodie Silvestri. He continued his day with pins in Olivet’s wins against #4 Coe, #28 Loras, and Washington & Lee. As a result of their performance at the Duals, Olivet moved up to #7 in the NWCA Team Rankings.

Pederson, a junior from Hastings, Michigan, is now 14-4 on the year and 9-0 against Division III competition. His career record is now 65-28. He was 34-10 a year ago and was the runner-up in the Midwest Regional. This year, he was 3rd in the Ohio Northern Invitational, helping Olivet to the team title. He is now ranked #2 in the latest NWCA Individual Rankings (the d3wrestle.com Rankings have not yet been updated since this past weekend’s action). Olivet will be back in action January 5th at the Waynesburg Invitational before heading to the NWCA National Duals the following weekend.

Wrestler of the Week (12/2-12/9): James Buss

Frosh James Buss has won three tournaments in his first six weeks as a Duhawk

The d3wrestle.com/WWSport.com Wrestler of the Week for the week of 12/2-12/9 is James Buss of Loras. Buss continued his excellent debut season with a win at 285 at Wartburg’s Dick Walker Invitational. After a major decision and decision got him to the finals as the #2 seed, he faced returning All-American and #2 ranked Ryan Fank of Wartburg, a 2012 All-American. In a low scoring bout, Buss prevailed with a 3-1 tiebreaker win. The win was the third tournament win for Buss in his young career.

Buss, a freshman from Chicago, is now 14-3 on the year. He was the champion in the Silver Division of the Loras open and the Freshman Division at the Luther Open along with last weekend’s victory at Wartburg. Of his three losses, two came in a tri-meet against Division I Purdue and Northern Illinois. Prior to this past weekend’s victory, buss was ranked #7 in the latest NWCA Rankings. Loras next competes in the Desert Duals in Las Vegas on December 16th. against Waldorf, Olivet, and Rhode Island College.

Wrestler of the Week (11/25-12/1): Kaleb Loht

Kaleb Loht Messiah

The d3wrestle.com/WWSport.com Wrestler of the Week for the week of 11/25-12/1 is Kaleb Loht of Messiah. Loht continued his undefeated season with a championship at the Messiah Petrofes Tournament on Saturday, December 1st. He rode a fall, a major decision and a decision to the finals at 141 lbs. where he faced NWCA #1 ranked Brian Bistis of Cortland, a returning All-American. Loht scored a late takedown to provide the margin of victory in a 6-4 win.

Loht, a sophomore from McClure, Pennsylvania, is now 17-0 on the season after picking up another win in last Friday’s dual meet with York. He has won titles at the Messiah Invitational, Roger Williams Invitational, and the Messiah Petrofes Invitational. He was also named the Outstanding Lightweight Wrestler at the Mount Union Duals. He is #3 in the latest d3wrestle.com Rankings and #9 in the NWCA poll. His career record is now 55-6 after putting up a 38-6 record as a freshman and placing 3rd at the Empire Championships. Messiah is off until the North/South Duals on January 5th at Ursinus.

Gettysburg to host East Region

Facilities

The NCAA announced today that Gettysburg College will host the East Regional on March 2nd, 2013 as a replacement site for The College of New Jersey. The event was moved due to the recently passed sports gambling law in New Jersey.  The East Region is made up of 18 teams and includes the entire Centennial Conference as well as many of the Metro conference teams.
