Van Kley promoted to VP at Central, leaves coaching role

0

Eric Van Kley has been promoted from Athletic Director and Wrestling Coach to Vice President of Athletics at Central College. He will leave the head coach position he has held for the past 17 seasons. He has also served as Athletic Director since 2012.

Central elevates Van Kley to vice presidential role

Central president Mark Putnam said of Van Kley, “Athletics has long served as an integral co-curricular component of a Central education and is part of the fabric of the college’s history. Central now serves more than 700 student-athletes each year. As the athletics landscape continues to evolve and the program’s impact on the life of the college grows, the leadership demands, challenges and opportunities are expanding exponentially.

Elevating this position to the vice presidential level is reflective of that. But it is also reflective of the energy and vision Eric is providing as the program’s leader. Central is highly regarded for its role in the growth of NCAA Division III, particularly with regard to the development of women’s athletics as well as the articulation of the original Division III philosophy. And Eric has done nothing but enhance Central’s athletics reputation during his tenure. He has grown steadily in his position and continues to take on responsibilities that far exceed those of a traditional athletics director. It is time that we recognize that.”

Central is searching for a new head wrestling coach. Interested applicants can APPLY HERE and should contact Vice President for Athletics Eric Van Kley directly with interest in this position.

Four All-Americans return at this weight and one more is up from 197, but none of them are seeded first here. Rayshawn Dixon has gone undefeated with his signature win a fall over then-#1 Donovan King of Olivet in the finals at Wheaton. He lost an absolute heartbreaker in the round of 12 last year. His coaches challenged for a last second takedown and the third party review occurred, but a radio miscommunication resulted in Dixon having his hand raised just before another official came sprinting to the mat to relay the actual decision that resulted in his opponent winning the match. He hopes for less drama this year.

He will have a strong field to reckon with. Tyler Kim, the 3rd place finisher from last year (4th in 2022) is back, as is King who placed 5th last year and 2nd in 2022. Carl DiGiorgio of Coast Guard defeated Michael Douglas of UW-La Crosse in the 7th place match, and both return. DiGiorgio is also undefeated, and his best wins are over the two other Northeast Qualifiers. Last year’s champion at this weight, Jack Heldt, moved up from 197 the previous year and won the tournament after beating King in the Central Region finals. This year, All-American Doug Byrne moved up from 197 and defeated King in the Central Region finals.

Robby Bates made an unseeded run to the semifinals in the 2022 tournament before finishing 6th. He beat the undefeated top seed in round one and ultimately fell in the semifinals to the the eventual champ (that was later vacated). He did not qualify last year, but he is back in the bracket in 2024 after winning the Lower Midwest region with an overtime fall in the finals. His opponent in that match was Wartburg’s Mitch Williamson, a 2021 NJCAA champion for Iowa Lakes.

Guyon Cyprian entered the regional unseeded with a losing record on the year. He then lost his first match to the 3rd seed. He proceeded to win six matches in a row to claim the final qualifying spot in the Upper Midwest, beating the 3rd seed in their rematch in the consolation semis. He has managed to push his record to 14-11 with that performance.

Both finalists are back at this weight in champ Massoma Endene of Wartburg and runner-up Coy Spooner of Coast Guard. Endene won 10-6 in last year’s finals and kept Coast Guard from having its first ever NCAA champion in wrestling. Both are undefeated and have swapped the top two seeds from last year’s tournament. Endene had little trouble in the regional. He had two tech falls and three falls, the last of which only took 14 seconds in the finals. He leads the current Most Dominant standings for DIII. Spooner had to work a little harder, beating JWU’s Dylan Harr 2-0 in the finals after defeating him 4-3 earlier in the season.

Harr is the only returning 2023 All-American here, placing 4th as an unseeded entry last year. He beat the the 5th, 6th, and 8th seeds after losing to Endene in the first round. Gable Crebs did not qualify for Lycoming last season, but he finished 7th in 2022. Ben Kawcyznski of UW-La Crosse did not qualify last year either, but he was in the bracket at 285 in 2022. Luke Hopkins was in the tournament last year, but he qualified two weight classes down at 174.

Returning to this weight is Parker Venz from Augsburg. The Auggies qualified eight wrestlers last year and come home with seven All-Americans. Venz was the one who missed the podium, after Harr eliminated him in the first consolation round. This year, he is determined to be wrestling on day two. Gage Linahon lost his first match here last year and then missed his first consolation match due to a misunderstanding about the schedule. He is making his third trip to the tournament and is looking for his first win.

Lorenzo Pellot’s brother Mauro qualified at this weight last year, and Lorenzo is in the bracket in 2024. The two were in the same region this year and could have met in the semifinals, but an injury in the previous round eventually forced #1 seed Mauro from the tournament, opening a path for #5 seed Lorenzo to make the finals and punch his ticket to La Crosse.

Just two 2023 All-Americans return at this weight in 4th place finisher Bentley Schwanebeck-Ostermann and 7th placer Charles Baczek. Schwanebeck-Ostermann has not been seriously challenged by a DIII opponent this year and holds onto his #1 ranking heading into the tournament. Baczek is undefeated and has had a similarly smooth ride through the season so far. Outside of those two, ranking this weight has been a challenge all year as wrestlers take turns picking up big wins. The #3 ranked wrestler in the February 22 rankings, Sampson Wilkins of Castleton, did beat Baczek in the first round of last year’s NCAA tournament.

Wilkins won the Northeast region to return to the tournament for the second time. He has just two losses this year, one of which he turned around by beating JWU’s DeVivo in the regional semifinals. He has wins over a full third of the entries at this weight. Cael McLaren, one of the six, has had a great back half of the season, picking up a somewhat unexpected Wheaton title and beating a few wrestlers he had lost to earlier on the way to a regional runner-up finish. The winner of that region, Kasey Ross of Wartburg, lost to Baczek and Schwanebeck-Ostermann but has beaten every other DIII opponent so far.

Trent Furman of NYU was a 2022 NCAA qualifier way down at 157 lbs. and now is back in the tournament three weight classes up. He even wrestled 157 just last year. Sean Malenfant of Alfred State pinned Furman this year and joins teammate Zach Levey (133) as the first ever NCAA DIII qualifiers for his team. Dylan Wellbaum of Adrian and Gavin Layman of Ohio Northern are returning to the tournament this season, though Wellbaum had qualified each of the past two years up at 197.

Malenfant beat Jack Ryan of Oneonta in the regional finals as Ryan makes a second trip to the championships. His only other loss this season is to Wilkins. The Southeast region was a slugfest with winner George Mosely coming in as the third seed. He was a 2020 NCAA qualifier and 2021 NWCA placewiner. Joel Martsinovsky brings his oft-misspelled name to the tournament for the first time as a senior. This year was the first time he ever even wrestled in the regional tournament. Third in the region is Ryder Slayton of Messiah who had to avenge a loss from earlier in the same tournament to earn his slot here.

Zane Mulder returns for Wartburg to defend his 2023 NCAA title at this weight. He was undefeated this season until the Lower Midwest final where Zeb Gnida of Loras got his first win over Mulder in three tries this year, scrambling for the winning takedown with four seconds left. Mulder will now be seeded behind his finals opponent from last year, Jared Stricker of UW-Eau Claire. Stricker has only lost to Division I opponents and is 38-2 on the season. Despite the loss to Gnida, the most likely scenario has Mulder and Stricker facing off again in the finals this Saturday night, though unexpected results are the norm at this event.

The 4th, 5th, and 7th place finishers also return from last year’s bracket. Charlie Grygas of Oswego was fourth and has qualified for the third time in his career. Last month, he became the all-time wins leader at Oswego. He has a few losses this year, including one to Roanoke’s Xavier Preston, the third place finisher in the Southeast. Stefan Major was 5th last year and 7th the year before. He has wins over five other qualifiers but also losses to four DIII wrestlers who did not qualify. Seth Goetzinger was 7th last year in his first trip to the tournament. His only DIII losses are to Mulder and Stricker.

Aiden Ashburn of John Carroll was 10-10 as a freshman last year and entered the regional with a16-15 record. He proceeded to upset the #1 and #4 seeds on his way to the finals where he received a forfeit and will enter the tournament as a regional champion. Blake Williams of Adrian forfeited to Ashburn but will wrestle again at the national tournament though down a weight from last year. Ganon Smith of Elizabethtown finished third to qualify for the second year in a row. He did not get to compete last year due to an injury, so this will be his first national competition.

It is worth returning to Zeb Gnida and his upset win over Mulder in the regional final. Coming into this season, the senior had a career record of 16-9. This year, he is 21-3 and a regional champion. As noted earlier, two of his losses are to Mulder who he finally defeated in the regional. Other regional champs include Jason Geyer of NYU who is 22-1, and Jackson Gray of Ithaca, who finished 8th and 4th in the last two regional tournaments and will make his first NCAA appearance on Friday morning.

Matt Lackman of Alvernia lost in overtime in the national finals last year to his brother Nathan. Fortunately, he has no family drama this year and will be able to focus on putting another Lackman on top of the podium. He is 42-0 this year with wins over seven other qualifiers and 36 bonus point victories. He will be challenged by a strong field that includes three All-Americans from last year at the weight. Noah Leisgang was third last year, beating TCNJ’s Sacco in the consolation finals. Sacco beat Cooper Willis of Augsburg in the consolation semifinals. The 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th placewinners at this weight from last year are all back to slug it out again.

Willis had only lost to Iowa’s Mike Caliendo before the regional and had defeated the defending Division II champ twice early in the season. He then lost 1-0 to Leisgang in the Upper Midwest semifinals after Leisgang rode him out for the entire third period. Leisgang went on to win an overtime decision over Tristan Massie of UW-Eau Claire in the finals, avenging a loss from December. Massie is a returning qualifier who was eliminated from last year’s tournament by Willis. Massie also has a loss to Willis this season in November.

Will Esmoil of Coe went on a tear at the end of the season and dominated the tough Lower Midwest Regional with three falls and two tech falls. He finished 4th at this weight in 2022 but missed out on qualifying last season with a 7th place regional finish. He has two losses to Willis and one to Northeast Regional champion Patrick Wisniewski of JWU. He pinned 2023 round of 12 finisher Alex Villar of North Central in the first period of the regional final.

Brian Schneider qualified last year as well for Elizabethown at this weigh. He has just four losses on the year. Three are to Lackman and one was in the regional tournament to Sacco. He has one win over a wrestler in the bracket, a major decision over Averett’s Taylor in January. He also has two wins over 2023 qualifier Zach Needles, a late injury scratch at the regional.

Nolan Hertel won last year’s NCAA Championship in tight tiebreaker match and has gone on to win every match since, including another tiebreaker win in the NWCA All-Star match against the defending Division II champ at 157. He is a three-time Upper Midwest regional champ and aiming for his third All-American award. Cooper Pontelandolfo of NYU was 6th at 165 last year and the year before but dropped to 157 this season. He has won 26 matches in a row since losing at the Princeton Open to start the year, including wins over Ryan Smith of Stevens and Peter Kane of Williams, the other two returning All-Americans in the bracket.

Kane lost his first and last match of the season so far, but won everything in between after finishing 7th here last season. His participation in the postseason was a bit of a question mark since his last match before the regional came on January 6th. His opponent in the 7th place match last year was Ryan Smith of Stevens, the highest ranked of the three wrestlers named Smith in this weight class (there were two Vogels in my bracket in 2003). Tim Smith turned around an earlier loss to Thomas West to win the Central region, and Gabriel Smith will be looking for his first win over a qualifier this year when the tournament starts on Friday.

Upper Midwest runner-up Blake Jagodzinske was one of the most overqualified backups in the country last year who was stuck behind NCAA runner-up Tyler Shilson. Last season, he was 31-4 with wins over three NCAA qualifiers. This year, he is 16-6 with a win over 2023 149 runner-up Javen Estrada and Lower Midwest qualifier Clayton McDonough of Luther. The third place finisher in the same region is freshman Jermaine Butler, a Wheaton champ with a win this year over the Lower Midwest winner.

Patrick McGraw of John Carroll has been seeded the last two years but is still looking for a spot on the podium. Last year, he lost to Kane and Ryan Smith, both of whom are in the bracket this year. He was upset in the regional semifinal by Tim Smith but came back to qualify for the third time. Thomas West of Baldwin Wallace was also eliminated in last year’s tournament by Ryan Smith

Michael Petrella of Baldwin Wallace is a two time finalist and returning champion who has just four career losses to go with 100+ wins. He was undefeated last year and this year so far and is a close second in the NCAA Most Dominant Standings. He is 38-0 with 36 bonus point wins. His father Paul was the first ever wrestling national champion for Baldwin Wallace. He is a huge favorite in a weight class that only has two returning 2023 All-Americans. The other is last year’s 8th place finisher Charlie Stuhl of Augsburg. His only DIII losses are to the wrestlers who placed above him at the region, and he has wins over both finalists from the Lower Midwest.

Even though there are just two returning 2023 All-Americans, there is a lot of national experience in the weight. Michael Conklin was a 2022 placewinner here while Zach Sato and Colby Frost qualified in 2022. None of the three qualified last year, but they have returned to the bracket in 2024. Daniel Uribe, Matthew Beyer, and Tyler Goebel were here at 149 last year, and Eric Kinkaid and Nate Fitt both qualified at 141 last season. That makes ten entries at this weight with national tournament experience.

Zach Soda joins his teammate Berdiyorov as transfer qualifiers for New England College. Soda spent two years at Edinboro before returning to his native New England and finishing as a regional runner-up. Another transfer in the mix here is Charlie Dojan of Wartburg. He was 14-2 last season behind national runner-up Javen Estrada. He has a pair of wins over Kinkaid of Loras but lost to him in the regional final. The third place finisher in the Lower Midwest was Ty Koedam of Coe. He has double digit losses and no wins against anyone in the field, but he did earn his spot here by beating Wheaton champ Axel Hernandez of Buena Vista twice at the regional.

Washington & Jefferson freshman Taylor Smith has had an outstanding debut season. His high school results were good but not necessarily predictive of a 43-4 season and a regional championship. He split with Mike Glynn of RIT (losing the last match), and his only other win against a qualifier was the regional final against Even Linder of Washington & Lee. He did, however, win against an eventual DII qualifier in his very first match for the Presidents. Smith joins Koedam as the only freshmen qualifiers at 149. Also worth noting here is Max Honiss of Albion. He went from 16-20 last year to a national qualifier this year.

Sam Stuhl of Augsburg won a battle of unseeded wrestlers in last year’s NCAA final when he defeated Ethan Harsted of Wheaton 5-1. He will not have to repeat the feat this year, though he will not be the favorite in La Crosse this weekend. That honor goes to Jacob Reed of Ohio Northern. Reed has placed third in each of his first two years for the Polar Bears, though his one loss here last year was to Stuhl in the semifinals. He is undefeated this year at 26-0. Another contender is Josh Wilson of Greensboro. He is undefeated against DIII and a two-time NCAA All-American, though he was down big in the regional final before pinning Messiah’s Gehr.

Gehr was a 2022 All-American at this weight but did not wrestle last year. He had a tight match with Reed in the Wheaton finals that hinged on one scramble that Reed won. Only two of his 23 wins have lasted a full seven minutes. One of those decisions was against fellow qualifier Jacob Dado of Ozarks. James Rodriguez became the first ever All-American for Castleton in 2022 with an 8th place finish (losing to Gehr in the 7th place match) and improved by one spot to 7th here last season. He gave up a late takedown to lose in the regional semifinals to Bobur Berdiyorov of New England College (and Uzbekistan). Berdiyorov was an NJCAA All-American last season and also wrestled for his junior college in the 2018-2019 season.

Kyler Romero of Wartburg has been biding his time to get a chance in the Knights lineup and has made the most of it with a 20-1 record and two wins over the defending champion. He avenged his one loss to Schropp of Loras twice late in the season. Lower Midwest runner up Pierre Baldwin has two losses, one to Romero and one to Dresden Grimm of Coe that he avenged in the regional semifinal.

Mideast champ Alex Samson of St. John Fisher is the first qualifier for the Cardinals since bringing the program back in 2022 after a 38 year hiatus. He is currently undefeated in his first season as a grad transfer from Mercyhurst. He defeated Gabe Goss of Oswego, a freshman who upset #5 ranked returning qualifier Xavier Pena of Centenary in the regional semifinals. Pena joins other 2023 qualifiers Evan Burge of Wabash and Victor Perlleshi of JWU in the search for a spot on the podium in La Crosse.

Defending national champion Robbie Precin has the longest current winning streak in all three divisions of NCAA wrestling. He recently won his fourth regional title and has just two losses in his career. He is a big favorite to earn his third straight NCAA title. Three other returning 2023 All-Americans are in the bracket and are among those hoping to dethrone Precin. Tyler Fleetwood defeated Jaden Hinton in the 3rd place match a year ago and both return this year. Hinton has two losses, one at 141 and one to a wrestler not in the bracket. Fleetwood was 3rd at the Upper Midwest, and half of his eight losses are to regional champ Dominik Mallinder of Whitewater, a qualifier here a year ago. The final returning All-American is Chase Randall of Coast Guard. Randall was 8th last season and won the Northeast region this year.

The regional weekend threw some chaos into the weight when a pair of top-5 wrestlers failed to qualify. Coe’s Bryce Parke lost to Boryla of Augustana in the quarterfinals but came back to pin Boryla in a spladle late in the consolation finals to earn his spot in the tournament. Top seeded Ty Bisek was upset by the 8th seed in the Upper Midwest then fell 13-0 to Fleetwood in a consolation semifinal match between returning All-Americans with the same result as the consolation semis at last year’s NCAA tournament.

Joey Langeman of Trine became the first qualifier for his team since 2015 with a third place finish in the Central. He lost in the quarterfinals, but came back to get 3rd as the #5 seed. Alfred State got their first ever NCAA qualifier in Zach Levey at this weight. Levey previously qualified for Brockport, so it will not be his first trip to the tournament. He beat Haws from Centenary, a qualifier last year, to earn his spot in the regional finals. Haws came back for 3rd to earn his second trip to the championships.

Gabriel Leo-Esparolini of JWU, Desmond Diggs of Mount St. Joseph, and Mideast champ Isaias Torres of Ithaca all return from last year’s bracket. Also returning to the championships is Zach Beckner of Ferrum. Beckner was a 2017 NCAA runner-up at 125 in his first season at Ferrum, making and unseeded run to the finals. He is back in the lineup this year and back at the NCAA tournament after taking 3rd in the Southeast.

2024 NCAA Preview: 125 lbs.

Six All-Americans return to this weight class including the 2022 and 2023 champions Jacob Decatur and Joziah Fry. The two met up in the finals last year with Fry winning 4-2. Neither of these two have put in a full season at 125 with Fry spending the entire second half at 133 and Decatur not taking the mat until the second semester. Fry cruised through the regional, winning by tech fall in the finals in his first action at 125 since December 2nd. Decatur is 26-2 in a busy half season of work. He lost twice at the National Duals, once to North Central’s Guzman and once to Koontz of Dubuque who is not in the bracket here. He does have wins over five other wrestlers in the bracket.

Christian Guzman was third last year after an impressive freshman season. He has been even better this year, only losing at the Midlands to a pair of DI opponents. He has the already mentioned win over Decatur as well as a pair of wins over conference rival and returning All-American Blasioli of Millikin. Blasioli was 5th here last year, winning his final match against Barrett of Averett, the winner in the Southeast Region. Last year’s 4th place finisher, Jake Craig of Southern Maine, dropped to 125 for the second half of this season and finished third in the Northeast Region. He avenged a loss from earlier in the season after falling to 2023 qualifier Gavin Bradley of Castleton in the semifinals.

Keep an eye out for Izza Balsiger of UW-Eau Claire. He was a 2013 All-American at UW-La Crosse as a freshman and returned in January at 31 years old to qualify as the Upper Midwest runner-up. His last year on the mat was the first under the regional system. With the tournament in Wisconsin, his wife and two children should be able to watch him compete. Jalen Dunson, who defeated Balsiger in the regional final, had a great tournament and has come on strong in the second half of the season.

Jayden Cardenas won the Mideast region at 125 after qualifying at 133 last season. He defeated 2023 All-American Lamparelli of Muhlenberg and then beat Ethan Liptzin of Elizabethtown in the finals after Liptzin upset top-seeded Matt Griffin of TCNJ who did come back through to qualify in third. Two other wrestlers making a return to the tournament include Day of Wabash, who was seeded 3rd last year but went 1-2, and Jack Stanley of Mount Union, a 2020 qualifier for Baldwin Wallace and a 2022 qualifier at his current school.
