Career Record at school: 8-6

2012-2013 Dual Meet Record: 8-6
2012-2013 National Qualifiers and All-Americans: Greg Sanders (1st, 149), Sean Ambrocio (125)
Returning Qualifiers and All-Americans: Sanders and Ambrocio

Top returning starters:
Greg Sanders: NCAA III Champion
Sean Ambrocio: NCAA III Qualifier
Marcus Lubner: Ranked most of year at 133 (season ending injury)

Season outlook:
First year coach Corey VanGroll had a nice start to his head coaching career as he ended the year celebrating the program’s first ever NCAA Champion as Greg Sanders upset defending champ Kodie Silvestri to win both the 149 lb. title and the Most Outstanding Wrestler award. He and former high school teammate and fellow NCAA qualifier Sean Ambrocio each have two more years left to help Concordia continue to improve. Marcus Lubner returns for one final season after a pair of injury shortened campaigns in 2012 and 2013. With Sanders and Ambrocio leading the way, and a solid group of sophomores gaining experience, it should be another successful season at Concordia.

Career Record at school: 14-16 (70-40-2 overall in career)

2012-2013 Dual Meet Record: 9-6

Top returning starters:
125 Tyler Foley, 6th MW Regional
165 Matt Tuttle 4th MW Regional
184 Jared Groeneveld 6th MW Regional

Top incoming wrestlers:
Alex Bray, State Champion, 125
Jared Bruner, 2X State Champion, 165/174

Season outlook:
As they enter Year 3, the Scots have added a third full-time coach, built a roster of 55 (just 1 senior) and announced the building of a new wrestling facility for the 2014-15 season. While they lack experience on the national level, the depth has now arrived. The next goal is to climb up the ranks in the tough MW Regional. Tyler Foley, Matt Tuttle, and Jared Groeneveld all placed in a region that produced more All-Americans than any other and will again be a stiff test to what is still a new program looking for their first NCAA qualifier. With a large roster and good coaching staff, the odds are in their favor to send at least one wrestler to Cedar Rapids in March.

2013-2014 Knox Preview

Knox College Prairie Fire
Head Coach: Joe Norton
Years at School as head coach: First Year
Assistant Coaches: Frank McAndrew

@KnoxWrestling

2012-2013 Dual Meet Record:2-14

Top returning starter: Greg Ventris – 2nd at NWA Conference in 2013.

Top incoming wrestlers:

133: Rich Thomsen – Lindenhurst, IL

149: Kyle Heller – Mahomet, IL
165: James Young – Bayfield, CO

197: Connor Niemiec – Oak Lawn, IL
285: Joe Chirbas – Kenosha, WI
285: JJ Nawrot – Deerfield, IL

Season outlook:
Knox College will have a full time wrestling coach this season for the first time since 1983. Joe Norton comes over from North Central College where he competed for four years before serving as an assistant coach for three. The biggest task will be to build the roster and attract quality recruits. Greg Ventris is the top returner, a junior that will compete at 174, and a couple of freshmen enter the picture with state tournament experience. The Prairie Fire may still struggle to compete in the tough Central Regional, but should see vast improvements with a full-time coach at the helm.

Cultural Exchange Workout

Link to d3wrestle.com International Coverage, including updates from the 2012 and 2013 Cultural Exchange trips.

The plans for next years Cultural Exchange trip are being formulated. George Kalchev of George Tours has put together a 5 capital, 4 country trip for 2014. This trip would include Paris, France, Romania, Turkey and Bulgaria. They are hoping to have a group of 20-30 for next year’s trip.

The trip has been moved up one month to accommodate more students from the US and their summer jobs and employment.  This also works well for the countries on the tour as they are still in their competitive season trying to make club and national teams.  The trip will be a 12-13 day trip starting at the end of May and running through the first week of June.  The team will most likely assemble in New York to fly out together.  The cost of the trip right now is $3000 and a deposit of $300 will reserve that price up until the first of the year.  This price includes round-trip airfare from New York and all travel expenses, hotel, training, sightseeing, and three meals a day.  Anyone interested should contact Tim Fader at 262-472-1867 or fadert@uww.edu.  He will also be taking applications for the coaching positions for this trip. The Division III Coaches Association has provided a stipend for the head coach and assistant coach for the trip as well as an amount to make team singelets and warmups.  More information will be coming soon, and click the link at the top to see blogs from past trips.

Last year’s trip had wrestlers from Ursinsus, Johnson and Wales, Messiah, UW Whitewater, Lakeland, Heidelberg, Elizabethtown and Norwich. The team included All Americans and NCAA Qualifiers as well as guys that had not competed in college yet. They never weighed in but competed three times with anywhere from 4-8 matches on the trip.

A 2007 NYU graduate with a Bachelor of Science degree in finance, Kobilansky was a four-year member of the wrestling team. He compiled 118 career victories, the third-highest total in program history. During his NYU career, Kobilansky earned University Athletic Association (UAA)
Rookie of the Year honors, UAA Most Outstanding Wrestler accolades as a senior, was a three-time National Wrestling Coaches’ Association Scholar All-American and UAA All-Academic honoree, an 11-time UAA Athlete of the Week selection, and was the only three-time NCAA Championships qualifier in NYU program history.

“Having Gene back with us is a terrific boost for our program,” said NYU Head Coach Bruce Haberli. “The skills and knowledge he brings of both wrestling and New York University will be a great benefit to our wrestlers.

Kobilansky, who also earned a certification in management consulting from Yale University in 2007, went on to win a silver medal in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu at the Pan Am Games in 2007. He also currently does private instruction with aspiring Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fighters.

“I’ve wanted to be a wrestling coach at NYU ever since I graduated,” Kobilansky said. “I am excited to finally have that opportunity to give back to the program.”

Knox Hires Norton

Joe Norton

Knox College has announced the hiring of Joe Norton as their new head wrestling coach. Norton comes from North Central College where he was a graduate assistant coach and four time Great Lakes Regional placewinner as a competitor. Norton replaces longtime coach Tony Islas who left the school after 12 seasons. Read below for more.

Joe Norton Named New Head Wrestling Coach

Thanks to the generosity of former Knox wrestlers, a former nationally ranked NCAA Division III grappler will lead the Prairie Fire wrestling program.

Joe Norton takes the reins as the new full-time head wrestling coach on September 16. He replaces Tony Islas, who stepped down in July after 12 seasons as a part-time coach with the Prairie Fire to take a position as a high school administrator.

Norton comes to Knox from his alma mater, North Central College in Naperville, Illinois, where he served as a graduate assistant wrestling coach from 2010 to 2012. His responsibilities included recruiting and retaining quality student-athletes, as well as helping to plan and run team practices and workouts.

Norton was a four-year varsity letter winner as a member of the North Central wrestling team between 2006 and 2010. He had 94 career victories on the mat and was a four-time NCAA regional place winner. He was a two-time conference runner-up, three-time tournament champion, seven-time tournament finalist, captain of a team ranked as high as #4 in NCAA Division III, earned a #9 national ranking as an individual, and was the recipient of the “Hammer Award” in recognition of outstanding commitment and work ethic.

“I had a great opportunity to spend seven years in a program that knows what it takes to be successful,” Norton said of his time at North Central.

Norton attended Montini Catholic High School in Lombard, Illinois, where he was a 2006 All-State selection and an AAU first-team All-American. He concluded his high school career with 102 wins and was the captain of three squads that won state championships.

“Joe comes from two great programs in Montini Catholic High School and North Central College,” said Knox College athletic director Chad Eisele ’93. “He has been taught and worked for some great mentors and I am confident that Joe is ready to take on the challenge of running his own program.”

Norton said he’s excited to lead a program that has such tremendous support. “The fact that Knox is willing to commit to wrestling says a lot about where the program can be. I’m thankful to Chad Eisele and President Teresa Amott for their faith in me to take the wrestling program to the next level.”

Norton is the seventh full-time coach hired by the College in the past two years.

Huntingdon College to add wrestling for 2014-2015

1

Huntingdon College in Montgomery, Alabama, has announced today that they will be adding a varsity Division III wrestling team to begin competition in the 2014-2015 season. The school has also announced the hiring of former Naval Academy wrestler and EIWA champion Tom Storey as the school’s first head coach. This addition means that Division III will continue a streak of adding a new program each year into a fourth season. Alma College began in 2011-2012, Mount St. Vincent began in 2012-2013, Ferrum College begins varsity competition this season, and Huntingdon will begin competing in 2014-2015.

Huntingdon is more than 500 miles from its nearest DIII competitor, so they may wrestle a schedule similar to Pacific where they see little DIII competition prior to the regional and NCAA championships. The hope here is that a successful Huntingdon program will spur other DIII schools in the South to start wrestling programs of their own. See the release below from the National Wrestling Coaches Association.

Huntingdon College (AL) Announces New NCAA Division III Wrestling Program for 2014-15 Season

Staff Writer – ELSM

Manheim, PA – In a week filled with great news for the sport of wrestling, Huntingdon College (AL) has announced that it will be adding a new varsity program for the 2014-15 season at the NCAA Division III level.

The addition represents the 100th new varsity intercollegiate wrestling program added across the nation since 2001 and the first NCAA wrestling program in Alabama in over 30 years.

“On behalf of the NWCA Board of Directors and our President Rob Koll, I am thrilled that the Huntingdon College Administration recognizes the educational value that wrestling will bring to their campus,” said NWCA Executive Director Mike Moyer.

The announcement for the new program was made at a press conference featuring Huntingdon College administrators, sponsors, friends of wrestling, and legendary University of Iowa Wrestling coach and Olympic Champion Dan Gable.

The news was made possible by a group of benefactors that collectively provided over $40,000 to help launch the program. Among these individuals are Bob Feldmeier Sr. (CEO of Feldmeier Equipment and former Princeton Wrestler), Greg Hatcher (prominent Arkansas businessman), and Stephen Chazen (President of UNUS Foundation).

In addition to these individuals, the U.S. Wrestling Foundation continued its support of college wrestling with a $10,000 donation to alleviate the start-up costs of the program.

“We are thrilled to support Huntingdon College as they take the step of adding wrestling to their intercollegiate athletic program,” stated Jeff Waters, Board President of the US Wrestling Foundation. “This support demonstrates the partnership between the Foundation, USA Wrestling and the National Wrestling Coaches Association as we come together to promote and grow the sport.”

John Purnell, president of Brute, celebrated the addition of another program to the college ranks with the NWCA by donating a set of competition uniforms for 15 wrestlers through its R.E.A.C.H.E.S. (Rewarding Educational Athletic Choices Helping Each Sport) program.

The Huntingdon College administration also announced that Tom Storey would be the first head coach of the new program. Storey, a former wrestler at the Naval Academy, was an EIWA Champion and wrestled in two NCAA Championships.

“I am honored to be selected as the head wrestling coach at Huntingdon College,” said Storey. “I am looking forward to building a dynasty in D3 wrestling!”

For more information on programs added since 1999, visit the “New and Re-Instated” section of the NWCA website.

Cortney Roberts Named Assistant Wrestling Coach at Mount Union

Over the past three seasons, Roberts has had stints as an assistant coach at both Thiel (Pa.) College and Lakeview (Pa.) High School.

He was a four-year starter at 125 pounds at NCAA Division I Gardner-Webb (N.C.) University and three times placed at the NCAA East Region tournament.

Jeff Jacobs Joins Wrestling Staff as Head Assistant Coach

HOBOKEN, N.J. (August 16, 2013) – The Stevens Institute of Technology wrestling team has added Jeff Jacobs as head assistant coach for the 2013-14 season, Head Coach Mike Clayton announced. Jacobs joins the Stevens staff following a two-year stint as an assistant wrestling coach at Delaware Valley College.

“Jeff has strong local ties and has demonstrated success as a collegiate wrestler at the NCAA DI and DII levels,” Clayton said. “He has helped recruit and develop student-athletes as a DIII assistant coach while earning his M.B.A. He will thrive in the type of work environment demanded of a full-time head assistant coach at a premier co-educational institution like Stevens Institute of Technology. We are all very excited to have Jeff join the Stevens wrestling family.”

While at Delaware Valley, Jacobs helped the team to a 16th-place finish in the nation, producing four NCAA All-American, one Academic All-American and nine Dean’s List honorees in the Spring 2012 semester along the way. He has also served as an assistant coach at the Shore Thing Wrestling Club in Lakewood, N.J. for the past six years, coaching numerous state champions and placewinners, regional champions and collegiate All-Americans.

Efrain Ayala has been elevated to the head coach position at UW-Oshkosh as of this week. He previously had been the assistant at Oshkosh under the departed Chris Stratton who resigned in May. See below for more.

Ayala Selected Head Wrestling Coach

After two years as an assistant, Efrain Ayala was named UW-Oshkosh’s head wrestling coach on Monday (Aug. 12). Ayala replaces Chris Stratton, who resigned in May.

Ayala helped the Titans finish 17th at the NCAA Division III Championship last season and 14th in 2012. Nazar Kulchytskyy won an individual national title each year. UW-Oshkosh also had Sam Engelland, Zachary Mueller and Dan Schiferl qualify for the national tournament.

“It feels good to be in the driver’s seat of a program that has a lot of potential,” Ayala said. “The team is already strong, and I have high expectations for our incoming recruiting class. This season is going to be exciting.”

Before coming to UW-Oshkosh, Ayala spent two years as an assistant wrestling coach and special education paraprofessional in the Kettle Moraine School District.

Ayala has also taught special education at Kennedy Elementary (2009) and was an assistant coach (2008-09) at Saint Peter High School in Minnesota.

“Efrain has been a key part of our program’s success the last two years,” Athletics Director Darryl Sims said. “I’m confident that his leadership will help our student-athletes reach their full potential.”

Ayala was a Nebraska state champion in high school before wrestling at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln during 2003. He then transferred to Minn. State University-Mankato and qualified for the 2005 NCAA Division II Tournament.

Ayala received his elementary education degree from MSU-Mankato during 2008.
