Season outlook:
Concordia returns half of their six NCAA qualifiers and one of their All-Americans in 149 lb. Jake Long. They will look to replace 2012 All-American Nate Schmitz and 2x All-American Tom Bouressa. The replacement for Bouressa, however, is senior Cody Kasprick who has wins over three national qualifiers last year while backing up Bouressa. Kyle Leduc was edged in a late season wrestle off by NCAA qualifier Kevin Fynboh, but he did defeat Fynboh in an official match last season. He should slot right in at 157 and contend right away. One other change in Moorhead is Matt Nagel officially taking over as head coach after four years on staff. The Cobbers have had four straight years in the top 15 at the NCAA Championships and will hope to extend that streak to five while breaking into the top ten.

285 Jonah Aurelio – 3x RI State champ and 2x New England placer.
285 Joe Bibbo – NJ District Placer
285 Robert Bishop-Cotner – 2nd Colorado States

Season outlook:
With as many as five lineup spots going to new wrestlers this season, it may take some time for the Wildcats to get their team sorted out this season. What is not changing is the presence of All-American 184 lb. wrestler Colin Lenhardt who returns in search of a higher finish in 2014. Also back for his sophomore campaign is Everet Desilets, the d3wrestle.com Freshman Team member at 157 lbs. Sean Prell and Joe Gaccione also both placed at the region last season and will look to do so again. JWU typically brings in a big recruiting class, and this year is no exception, which is good as they look to fill some holes in the lineup and compete in the NEWA and Northeast Region.

285 Anthony Fernicola, NJ Regional Qualifier with a 69-42 record

Season outlook:
Stevens returns three of four regional placewinners from last year’s team that won the Virginia Duals despite some injuries to important starters. Two time All-American Joey Favia has graduated, but East Region Outstanding Wrestler Mike Polizzi returns in search of his first All-American award. Also planning a return to the lineup this season is three time NCAA qualifier Ryan Dormann. Dormann was a qualifier in 2009, 2011, and 2012 and is also looking for his first trip to the second day at the NCAA Championships. With a number of former conference placewinners returning to the lineup this season and a big recruiting class in the fold, Stevens has a good chance to improve on last year’s finish both in dual meets and at the East Region.

141/149 – Mikhail Khibkin – MA All-State runner up
157 – Lucas Muntz – 2x New England High School placer

Season Outlook:
WPI will bring a lineup with some experience into 2013-2014 with as many as four senior starters. The team’s balance helped it place in the top half of multiple tournaments last season and finish the year with six regionally ranked wrestlers. Helping to bolster that experienced lineup are a pair of incoming freshman who each placed twice in the New England high school championships, especially likely 125 lb. starter Brian Amato. The team has come a long way in the last few years, and the hope is that 2013-2014 will be another big step in the right direction.

Season outlook:
After graduating a strong class that led Wesleyan to some of their greatest season in team history, the Cardinals look to a younger group to carry the torch in 2014. Josh Roometua finished a solid freshman campaign with a trip to the NCAA Championships and he will be aiming to improve on that finish this season. Classmate Jame Hamilton won 25 matches and beat at least one national qualifier during the season. Two wrestlers who could contribute this season are Ryan Sblendorio, who missed last year but placed in New England in 2012 and Chris Siracusa, a sophomore who had a winning record at 133 last year but may be 149 in 2014. With a lot of solid seniors graduating, there could be space in the lineup for some of the incoming class with 3x New England placewinner Devon Carrillo looking for time in the upper weights.

In addition to a solid recruiting class Ursinus adds two outstanding coaches to their staff; National Hall of Fame member, Jeff Bowyer and 2x NCAA Champion Seth Ecker (Ithaca) can only help the Bears get better. Chris Donaldson, 2013 semifinalist and 6th place finisher at 125 expects to step higher on the podium in Cedar Rapids while his teammates work to improve on last year’s performance at the 2013 East Region. Team depth is not a problem and the line-up should provide balance with over forty wrestles in the room. Several starters from 2013 will be challenged daily by a talented recruiting class which should make everyone better by March.

Season outlook:
The Spartans will be led by senior heavyweight Jason Pedigo. Pedigo has made steady improvements in his development and looks finish his career with a strong senior campaign. Sophomore 133-pounder Kalib Jackson was 16-12 last year but finished the season strong. Jackson is a dual-sport athlete and started the season late because of football. Through January and February he avenged several early losses and could be in the mix in the Midwest Regional. After losing five seniors to graduation last spring, Manchester will be green in 2013-2014. The Spartans will fill seven weights with freshmen. Despite their youth, this group of freshmen are talented and one of the best recruiting classes for Manchester in the last 4 years. Illinois state runner-up Rob Lane will highlights this group and will likely earn the spot at 149. There will be great competition at 165 and174 as the Lauffer, Floor, and Jones battle for starting roles. Indiana state qualifier Ty Webster will help solidify the top of the line-up as well.

A couple of former regional placewinners in Dallas Schurg and Pete Koostra are part of a veteran lineup. Caleb Staub missed last season but had 25 wins in 2012, while Nick Miceli was a conference champion last season and won 23 matches of his own. Illinois finalist Devin Mahnke is the top incoming wrestler, but Wisconsin placer Austin Bellile is there as well, along with a pair of qualifiers in Gross and Morzinsky.

Season outlook:
After finishing 8th for their highest finish since 1998, Springfield returns in 2013-2014 with a pair of All-Americans looking to lead the team back into the top ten. Derek Adams was unseeded but fought all the way back to fourth place, avenging losses earlier in the season to two different opponents. The bigger surprise for the Pride was Devin Biscaha winning the title at 157. Biscaha was unseeded and did not even win his region, but he beat the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th seeds on his way to the title. Both Biscaha and Adams return along with 125 lb. qualifier Tommy Casper. With six starter lost to graduation, the incoming freshmen will be leaned on heavily to help the team to future success.

Saint John’s University Johnnies
Head Coach: Brandon Novak
Years at School as head coach: 10th
Career Record at school: 73-62

2012-13 Dual Meet Record: 8-5
2012-13 National Qualifiers and All-Americans: Ryan Arne (157), Mitch Hagen (5th, 184), Ryan Michaelis (197), John Scepaniak (285), Nick Schuler (165) and Chris Stevermer (149)

Returning Qualifiers: Ryan Arne (157), Ryan Michaelis (197) and John Scepaniak (285)

Top returning starters:
-Ryan Arne: National Qualifier (157 lbs., 2013), 10-6 record last year
-Ryan Michaelis: National Qualifier (197 lbs., 2013), 10-6 record last year
-John Scepaniak: National Qualifier (Hwt., 2013), 13-16 record last year
-Dalton Sowers: 8-6 record last year at 133 lbs., 4th West Region
-John Wells: 10-7 record as a freshman last year at 125 lbs., 5th West Region
-Josh Willaert: 20-5 record as a freshman last year at 174 lbs., 4th West Region

Season outlook:
With seven starters returning, St. John’s is in good shape heading into 2013-2014. The team was third in a top-heavy West Region and looks to beat that this season. Half of the six 2013 qualifiers are gone, as well as their lone All-American Mitch Hagen, leaving a lot of responsibility to returning qualifiers Ryan Arne, Ryan Michaelis, and John Scepaniak. Arne and Scepaniak each picked up a win at the tournament, but they will need to do more this year if St. John’s is to move up from 18th place.  Dalton Sowers and Josh Willaert each came a match away from qualifying, so it won’t take much of a step up from them to make the trip to Cedar Rapids in March.

Alex McLaughlin 141/149 Two-time National Prep qualifier • Two-time state qualifier
Sam Sands 141 Two-time conference champion and state qualifier • National prep qualifier

Season outlook:
Johns Hopkins returns a veteran lineup that will bring a lot of experience to bear in 2013-2014. This team has finished first or second at the Centennial Championships each of the past three seasons. Even though the team graduated its only All-American from last year in runner-up Paul Marcello, 2012 All-American and 2013 qualifier Paul Bewak remains, as does 2012 qualifier Henry Stauber. 2012 All-American at 197 Reid Mosquera missed all of last season with an injury, but he hopes to return by the second half of this year to give the Blue Jays a trio of former NCAA qualifiers to go along with Kyle Spangler and Ray Yagloski who both finished one place away from from going to the NCAA Championships last March. The team should again be able to challenge for the conference championship.

133-Ryan Harter-NJ region qualifier
141-Branden Virgilio-NJ region qualifier
174-Luke Fernandez-NJ state qualifier
174-Avery Daniels-MD district qualifier
184-Josh Stencler-PA district qualifier
197-Ben Martin-PA region qualifier

Season outlook:
After surprising some and bringing home the Mideast Region title last year, Elizabethtown will return almost the exact same lineup as last year in an attempt to repeat the feat. Of their five NCAA qualifiers from 2013, only Phil Landis has graduated, leaving All-Americans Julian Meaney and Jeremy Rieth, along with qualifiers Chad Lammer and Jesse Meaney. In addition, Zeke Zimmer placed fourth  in the region and should be a contender to qualify in 2014. If the Blue Jays can put their best lineup on the mat on most days, they will be very tough to beat if they get a season-long performance similar to what they got at the end of last year.

2012-2013 Dual Meet Record: 9-3
2012-2013 National Qualifiers and All-Americans: Charlie Frankel (125), Dale Fava (141), Emmanuel Ajagbe (8th, 149), Dallas Winston (174), Aaron Karns (6th, 197)
Returning Qualifiers and All-Americans: Karns and Winston

Top returning starters:
Aaron Karns (JR, 197) NCAA All-American (6th) and regional champ
Dallas Winston (So, 174) NCAA Qualifier and 3rd at regionals
Mike Boardman (JR, HWT) Placed 5th at regionals, 17-12 on the season
James Dugan (SO, 157/165) 23-17
Hank Stinson (JR 157)
Conor Kirkegard (SO, 133) 19-9 last season
Zac Haynes (SO 125) returns back to college.

Top incoming wrestlers:
Vinny Fava (JR 149) transferred from Rider
Zach Roseberry (FR 285) State Champ from VA, 4th at senior nationals

Season outlook:
As Head Coach Steve Cantrell also takes on the role of Athletic Director at Delaware Valley, he is also faced with replacing three NCAA qualifiers in his lineup, but he will have his top finisher from last year back in Aaron Karns, a semifinalist at the NCAA Championships. Also back is Dallas Winston who was third in the East Region. Helping ease the transition should be transfer Vinny Fava who started at 141 for Rider last season but could be at 149 this year. Also, Hank Stinson looks to return to the Aggie lineup. The one time Penn State recruit wrestled seven times at 141 in the 2012 season but missed last year. He could return this season at 157 to give Delaware Valley a solid 1-2 punch at 149 and 157. Mike Boardman was a regional placewinner last year, but he could be challenged by incoming freshman and Virginia state champ Zach Roseberry.

2013-2014 Case Preview

Case Western Reserve University Spartans
Head Coach: Mark Hawald
Years at school at head coach: 2nd year
Career record at school: 2-9 record (44-35 overall)
Assistant Coaches: Adam Lange, Kevin Shadrach, Russ Tischer

2012-2013 Dual Meet Record: 2-9

Top Returning Starter: Josh Hall – 125 4th at ME Regional

Top Incoming Wrestlers:
Matt Moy – NY State Qualifier
Luke Marcelli – OH State Placer
David Brunk – OR State Placer

Season Outlook:
Second year head coach Mark Hawald continues his rebuilding process at Case after a successful tenure at Mount Union. Josh Hall just missed going to the 2013 NCAA Championships at 125 when he was forced to default in the consolation finals at the Mideast Regional to the wrestler he had defeated earlier in the quarterfinals. With Hall only a sophomore and the real strength of the team coming from this year’s incoming class, the future is where the most success will come for the Spartans. That said, the freshmen on the roster will get a lot of experience in the starting lineup and could improve rapidly. Last season was the first without an All-American at Case since 2007, and Hawald is hoping to start a new streak soon.
