There is little doubt that Terry Shockley ranks among the best wrestlers in Augustana history During his career, which s panned from 1958 through 1962, he virtually dominated the 130 and 137 pound weight classes. During this time frame the Vikings competed in NCAA College Division and a considerable number of regular season matches were against NCAA University Division opponents.

That didn’t deter the Rock Island native from piling up an impressive listing of credentials. After placing second in the College Conference of Illinois tournament in 1958-59 at 130 pounds, he won three straight league titles in 1959-60 (130), 1960-61 (130) and 1961-62 (137). Twice he won the Wheaton Invitational, taking the 130 pound title in 1961 and 137 pounds in 1962.

He placed second in the NAIA national tournament in 1961 at 130 pounds and was second in the NCAA College Division national tournament in 1962 at 137 pounds. That same year he won the NCAA Regional.

During his four year career with the Vikings he compiled a sterling record of 69-9 and set a school record with 29 pins. His dual meet record was 27-1 and he showed his durability by wrestling in every dual meet and tournament that Augustana competed in during his four year career.

Shockley was named the team’s MVP in 1961 and 1962 and he was the Most Outstanding Wrestler in the CCI in 1961 and 1962. He also won those same honors at the Wheaton Invitational and the NCAA Regional.

Shockley made quite a name for himself in the business world after his Augustana career ended and he and his wife Sandra have been tremendous benefactors to the college. The head wrestling coach position for the Vikings is endowed and named “The Terry Shockley Head Wrestling Coach”.
