Final 10 Qualifiers Announced

The NCAA has released the names of the last ten qualifiers after applying the formula set ahead of time. The formula is based on past performance of the conference similar to the process that determines the number of wildcards for each conference. It is not an arbitrary selection process but one that depends on the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd alternate choices of each conference eligible for an additional spot. The primary goal is to ensure that every weight class has at least 16 competitors, and then after that, the selections are made in rank order. The additional ten qualifiers are as follows:

125 Zach Mueller, Oshkosh

141 Jake Denhof, Elmhurst

141 Sean Giblin, Rhode Island

149 Drew Waggenhoffer, Wartburg

165 Nick Bach, Centenary

165 Collin Crowell, Roger Williams

174 Josh Kohler, Augsburg

174 Dan Schiferl, Oshkosh

184 Greg Rhoads, Wabash

285 Joey Giaramita, Cortland

  1. How did waggenhoffer qualify he finished 6th at conference and got beat 10-3 in cons semis and pinned in 5th place match.

  2. Same in New Englands. The second place 165 isn’t going, but the third place is. The second place kid from Coast Guard pinned the third placer. New England has a true champ, which also means a true second. Apparently that doesn’t matter.

  3. @X that’s terrible! If a spot needs to be filled, it should be based on the conf. results and not by the so called rankings.

  4. @RP and JA … That’s just what Wartburg needed, 10 qualifiers. And now, Weggie will prob get a better seed than the guys that beat him. The NCAA needs to get Wartburg’s genitals out of their collective mouths and do the right thing.

  5. The conference coaches pick who the alternates are. Wartburg coaches made an argument of why Wagenhoffer deserved an alternate position, and IIAC coaches voted that his in season results were enough to warrant a spot as the third alternate.

  6. Also, Wagenhoffer just didn’t lose, he got his butt kicked. After that, he deserves to go to Nationals?

  7. Everyone knows that you need to be peaking at the right time. Sure the season should count, but isn’t that for the seeding of the qualifier? But as in high school, if you don’t place at a minimum “placing” this week, you don’t move on to next week. Alternates should be assigned in final placing order of the qualifier.

  8. @X…I certainly agree. Also, some kids are good in duals, but in tournaments not so much. Some kids just don’t have the gas tank to sustain an all day long effort.

  9. I assume Coe coaches probably didn’t agree with the choice either, but he got voted in as a third alternate, not given the spot solely by Wartburg coaches, so clearly someone/multiple people decided he was deserving of going.

  10. Coe? why Coe????? maybe Cornell, like was posted above. BTW what happened to the 1st and 2nd alternate? NOTHING!!!!

  11. The first wildcard was at 125. The IIAC receives 30 auto bids and one wildcard. IIAC coaches chose the 125 as the first wildcard, and he is a qualifier at the NCAA tournament. An NCAA committee then uses the remaining alternates to ensure each bracket has at least 16 people. The second alternate selected was at 197, and a 16 man bracket had been filled. The only other alternate left, voted on by the IIAC coaches, was Waggenhoffer at 149. As it turned out, there was not a full 16 man bracket. Therefore, he was selected to the NCAA championships.

  12. What about 165? They had ranked wrestlers 1,2,6 & 7. I believe they all placed in the top 4 at conf. The previews stated that this weight class had a bid for a wildcard.

  13. It looks like Bonte got hurt in the 3rd/4th match, otherwise he very likely would have gotten the extra bid

  14. from what i understand Wagonhoffer had an injury he tried wrestling thru…this was taken into consideration as well as his year long performance…..the same thing M Mason from rutgers will be shooting for for to attend the DIV I tourney, as he suffreed his injury at the EIWA’s and defaulted…it happens
