Many New England teams will be competing at Roger Williams this weekend in Bristol, Rhode Island. The field appears to be made up mostly of NEWA schools, so this will be a chance to preview some matches that may decide national tournament qualifiers come February at the NEWA tournament.
#18 Bridgewater State and #20 Roger Williams will be there along with several other NEWA schools. Johnson and Wales may crack the rankings before the season is out, but they are currently missing All-American Steve Martell (165) and national qualifier Diego Crespo (197), both of whom they hope to get back for January at least. In terms of individuals, #9 Anthony Nicolicchia (RWU, 125), #1 Michael Bonora (141, Rhode Island), #10 Frank Cammisa (149, BSC), #10 Jerome Owens (174, JWU), and #9 Jim Quinlan (184, BSC) could all compete. 133 lb. national qualifier Steve Valastro of USM should also be there fresh off a win over 2007 All-American Justin Seifried last week.
The tournament will be a good test for those athletes looking to make a mark in the NEWA, and knocking off one of the ranked wrestlers there could get the attention of the rest of Division III.
