Yellow Jackets Name Guerra Head Wrestling Coach

Defiance College, an Ohio school that will be starting wrestling next season, has named Ashland University assistant Antonio Guerra as the school’s first wrestling coach. Guerra spent two seasons at Ashland, and he previously coached at Toledo Central Catholic High School where his team was the 2015 Ohio state runner-up. The Findlay graduate was a four time All-American, three time finalist, and two time NCAA Division II champion for the Oilers.

Yellow Jackets Name Guerra Head Wrestling Coach

DEFIANCE, OHIO — The Defiance College athletic program has named Antonio Guerra to lead the newly refounded Yellow Jacket wrestling program, which will begin competition in the 2018-19 school year.

“We are excited for Tony to join our staff and be the face of our wrestling program,” said interim athletic director Jodie Holava. “He has a very decorative background both as an assistant coach and as an athlete and feel he will be a great mentor for our student-athletes.”

Guerra comes to Defiance from Ashland University, where he has been the head assistant wrestling coach since September 2015. In his time with the Eagles, Guerra has organized fundraising activities, been the main contact for top recruits, and coordinated practice plans for the Division II institution. In the 2016-17 season, he helped Michael Labry to a national championship in the 133-pound weight class, Ashland’s first National Champion since 1996. As a team, the Eagles finished sixth in the country in the final NCAA rankings that season.

Prior to his time at Ashland, Guerra was the head coach at Central Catholic High School in Toledo, Ohio. During his tenure with the Irish, his teams placed in the top three in the state three times in his five seasons at the helm, including a state runner-up finish in 2015. Guerra led five individual state champion wrestlers, as well as 17 state placers, helping him earn two Three Rivers Athletic Conference Coach of the Year honors.

His coaching career began as a graduate assistant at the University of Findlay, where he coached from 2008 through 2010. While there, Guerra aided in developing a practice structure and offered help in the recruiting process. He also provided assistance with event planning and chaperoned wrestlers to dual meets and tournaments.

Guerra is a 2008 graduate of the University of Findlay, where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in biology. While wrestling for the Oilers, he was a two-time NCAA Division II National Champion, a three-time National Finalist, and a four-time Division II All-American. Guerra was also named Academic All-American and two-time University of Findlay Male Athlete of the Year honoree. Guerra is also a member of the Waite High School Athletic Hall of Fame.

Joe Regan next up at Mount St. Vincent

0

Joe Regan has been named the next head wrestling coach at the College of Mount St. Vincent, the school announced last week. He succeeds Dean Zenie who held the position for the two previous seasons. Regan comes to the Riverdale, New York, school after stints at Mahopac High School and Westchester Community College. He takes over a team that is currently in its sixth year of competition and will be the fourth head coach of the Dolphins.

Mount Saint Vincent Tabs Joe Regan As Head Wrestling Coach

Riverdale, N.Y. – After a months-long search of looking for their next lead man, the College of Mount Saint Vincent has chosen Joe Regan as their next Head Wrestling Coach. Regan, a native of Putnam Valley, New York, will take over a program that has been in existence since 2012.

Coach Regan has a wealth of knowledge in the sport of wrestling, as he’s been leading young men in the right direction since 2002, where he was a part of the coaching staff at Mahopac High School until 2007. During his time there, Coach Regan helped the school compile multiple accolades, including coaching three section champions while also achieving four section team titles in five years, amongst others.

After finding a passion for coaching and recognizing it was for him at Mahopac, Coach Regan took his talents to Westchester Community College, where he reigned as head coach from 2013 up until 2015. “During my time at WCC, I wanted to build a brand and turn something small into something big,” Regan told CMSVAthletics.com. “That’s what I plan on doing here.”

Because of the roster and school location, amongst other factors, Coach Regan sees Mount Saint Vincent as an ideal fit.

“While it’ll be a challenge in this strong wrestling area, I believe I’ll have the ability to make a strong program,” Regan said. “After meeting with the team, it was easy to see we have a great group of guys on the roster. I love what they bring to the table.”

And when it comes to the wrestling program as a whole, Coach Regan has goals both for the short and long term.

“This year will be a rebuilding year. But day in and day out we will get better, grow and create a foundation that we can build upon. But in the long term, the area of the school will help us bring in great recruits. It’ll give us the chance to make something fantastic here.”

Here is the second set of rankings for the 2017-2018 season. Freshmen and transfers were eligible to appear, and these rankings include results up through the weekend. There are a couple of points to consider with these. This is the last ranking that a wrestler can appear in without having competed. Next time, anyone who has not yet wrestled will be out. Also, this ranking gave some credit to last year’s results. In a few cases, a wrestler with NCAA experience stayed higher than might be expected given a loss or two. If their opponents continue to prove it, they will have the chance to rise. Finally, wrestlers are ranked at the weights at which they have actually competed. If a wrestler goes down or up, that will be reflected in future rankings.

The d3wrestle.com Wrestler of the Week is Jordan Newman of Whitewater. Newman placed 2nd at the Luther Open last weekend at 197 lbs. and picked up several big wins along the way. Wrestling out of the #2 seed, Newman started his day with a 44 second fall before moving on to face Steven Holloway of Iowa. Holloway spent much of last season as the starter at Iowa at 285 after an injury ended the original starter’s season. Newman collected a fall at 4:13 in the second period over the Hawkeye to make the semifinals, where he was set to face 2017 All-American Kyle Fank of Wartburg. Newman prevailed with a tight 2-1 decision. His day concluded with a loss in the finals to likely Iowa starter Jacob Warner, the #7 overall recruit in the class of 2017 according to FloWrestling and a Cadet World medalist. Newman also picked up a fall earlier in the week in the Warhawks season opening win against Oshkosh.

Newman, a senior from Blaine, Minnesota, is the defending NCAA Champion at 184 lbs. and is a two time All-American for Whitewater, finishing 8th in the 2015 championships at 174. He was 56-18 in his first three years of competition. With a 4-1 record last week, he picked up his 60th career win and is now 60-19. Newman and the rest of the Warhawks continue competing this week with a dual meet against WIAC foe Stevens Point on Thursday and a trip to the Concordia Open on Saturday.
