Wrestler of the Week: Zane Mulder

0

The d3wrestle.com Wrestler of the Week is Zane Mulder of Wartburg. Mulder won the 174 lbs. weight class in the Elite Division of the Luther Open and won in the season’s opening dual against Simpson earlier in the week. At Luther, Mulder opened with a tech fall and a fall to earn his spot in the finals. He prevailed 5-2 over Brennan Swafford of Iowa to take the title. Swafford transferred to Iowa this season and was the NAIA champion at 165 in 2020 and at 174 in 2021. Mulder was also named American Rivers Conference Wrestler of the Week for his efforts.

Mulder transferred to Wartburg from Iowa State last season and finished in 2nd place at 165 lbs. in the NWCA DIII Championships. He finished his first season with the Knights at 14-1 and is currently 4-0 after last weekend’s events. Wartburg next competes tomorrow night when they will host American Rivers Conference foe Nebraska Wesleyan in a dual.

Hanke to restart Linfield wrestling

0
Chad Hanke

Chad Hanke has been named head men’s and women’s wrestling coach at Linfield University. The Oregon native and former Oregon State Beaver will begin the process of reviving a men’s team that has not competed since 1985 while also getting the first women’s wrestling team in school history up and running. Hanke most recently coached at nearby McMinnville High School and also has coaching stops at Call State-Bakersfield, American, and Oregon State. As a competitor, he won over 100 matches for Oregon State and competed in the 2012 Freestyle Olympic Trials. Linfield’s teams will begin competing in the 2022-2023 season.

Chad Hanke to lead men’s and women’s wrestling programs

Chad Hanke has been hired to lead the relaunch of collegiate wrestling at Linfield University.

Director of Athletics Dr. Garry Killgore announced the hiring of Hanke as new men’s and women’s wrestling coach on Wednesday, November 3. Linfield recently unveiled plans to revive its dormant men’s wrestling program while also adding a new women’s wrestling program.

“Chad is an excellent person to be our first head wrestling coach in years,” said Killgore. “He has great street credibility, both as a competitor and as a coach. He is very well-connected on the West Coast and has good connections back East. His work ethic, positive attitude and his ability to connect well with his athletes will all serve him well in getting this program ‘off to the races.'”

2021-2022 d3wrestle.com Rankings #1

9

Early season rankings can be fraught as wrestlers move around in weight and compete (or do not compete). The first set of rankings this season is based on the best information available at the time of publication. Some teams provided projected lineup info, and that helped sort this list out. This year is especially difficult as many teams did not compete at all last year, some competed a little bit, and others competed through the NWCA Championships in Iowa. Filling out 26 names at each weight took some homework, guesswork, and intuition. Things will get better as the season gets fully underway. As usual, there are some caveats to remember:

  1. Wrestlers will be ranked at weights where they compete.
  2. Freshmen and non-DIII transfers will not appear in the first rankings.
  3. Anyone not expected to compete this semester will not be ranked until he wrestles.
  4. Contenders and Honorable Mention are not in order. That is why there are no numbers. The 5th guy on the Contender list is not ranked 15th.
  5. If one wrestler is not in the exact spot you think he should be, then the whole set of rankings, which includes 260 names, is worthless. We will try harder next time.

If you see any misspelled names or misidentified schools, please leave a comment or get in touch. If you see your own name on here, but you are not wrestling, let us know that as well.
