Roger Williams Preview

Roger Williams has brought in 26 freshman to go along with 26 returning athletes, making theirs one of the largest rosters in Division III. Seven starters return from a year ago, as do two others who were injured last year and started in 05-06. The loss of All-American Andy Lacroix will hurt, but they are hopeful that 2006 national qualifier Ant Nicolicchia can return from injury suffered at the end of last year. All ten probable starters have won at least 20 matches once in their career, while the group of newcomers has potential to be the best class RWU has had and will make things interesting as they look to improve upon 4th place finish in the NEWA and defend their New England Dual Meet.

After a season that saw UW-Oshkosh get their first All-American since 1999, Coach DeRoehn looks to the future with a strong recruiting class and an equally tough schedule for 2007-2008. UW-O again wrestles the Wisconsin Badgers and makes its first appearance in the National Duals. Four top 4 finishers from the 2007 WIAC return, including 30 match winner Justin Schmalfeldt and University of Wisconsin transfer Scott Rhoads. Heavyweight Jake Stebnitz returns after a medical redshirt year to try to build on his 27 win freshman campaign in 2006. Perhaps one of these will make it two years in a row with an All-American for Oshkosh.

Elizabethtown Preview

Previously posted season previews are available by clicking the link in the left hand column.

Coach Eric Walker hopes that the combination of a move to the Metropolitan Conference as well as the return of all 10 starters from 2007 will add up to a successful season in 2008. Elizabethtown has come a long way since the early part of the decade, when at times they had trouble fielding the minimum six wrestlers for an official dual meet. On at least one occasion, they were forced to cancel a match for this very reason. That was before Coach Walker, however, and the team continues to improve as he rebuilds a team that has seen success in the past and even had national champions. Adding strong programs in Division III makes the whole group better, and Elizabethtown is headed in the right direction.

Head Coach Tom Layte returns for his 8th season on the bench at MIT, and looks to again have a full lineup with six starters back from last year’s team. Conference placewinners Joe Silverman at 197 and Sean Jameson at 285 will be dropping to 184 and 197, respectively, in their bid to improve on last year’s finishes at the NEWA tournament. After a runner-up finish a year ago that left him just shy of the NCAA tournament, Silverman hopes the lower weight will have him wrestling in Iowa in March, seeking MIT’s fifth All-American award. Coach Layte has set goals of a winning record and top half finish in the 2008 NEWA tournament.

Morrisville State Preview

Morrisville State is in the midst of a transition from Junior College to NCAA Division III, and is in year two of the provisional period. They will not compete in the national championships, but will soon be a member of the Empire Conference. In anticipation, they brought in over 30 freshmen this year that will get valuable experience for when the provisional period is finished. Steve Wile returns to the line-up after taking a year off from school. Wile was a national qualifier in 2006. Byran Gomez had 25 wins last year and also returns along with Kevin Kinnear. Kinnear was a JUCO All-American in 2005. Jon Jones is new to the line-up and should have an immediate impact right from the start, as he was a JUCO National Champion in 2006.

Ursinus Preview

In 2007, Ursinus won their fifth consecutive Centennial title and Head Coach Bill Racich picked up his 400th career win. That they managed to win the conference with no champions shows their depth, but also shows where the team would like to improve their number of national qualifiers. Their lone qualifier (Kingsland) returns, though he will be up at 133, perhaps switching weight classes with Trevor Beard, a former F&M transfer. Mike Schwager, who placed 12th in all of the NCAA with 19 falls, returns at 165. New additions include Delaware runner-up Matt Turtle and coaches Maldwyn Cooper (former Canadian World Team Member) and Pat North (2x All-American at RIT).

Olivet College Preview

Olivet returns most of its strong team from a year ago, highlighted of course by 174 lb. runner-up Kyle Vanderhyde. There is also some anticipated shifts in weight as Jason Brew returns to his more natural 157 and 184 lb. qualifier Daron Cruickshank drops to 165. As the only Division III team in Michigan, Coach Hibbs has done a good job convincing talented Michigan wrestlers to stay home. “Lahar and Birmingham are obviously very nice additions to our program, but we also believe that this class has talent throughout. They should make our room a lot more competitive, and add some welcome depth,” adds Coach Hibbs. They have the talent to challenge Delaware Valley for the Midwest Regional title, and it will come down to who performs the best on that day. Hibbs adds, “We don’t have as much national level experience as we would like to carry with us, but we are excited about the rise in talent level and the training ethic now in our program. The announcement of a new wrestling facility in the next year also has created a degree of anticipation. This season will be mostly about whether we can mature as a team and be ready to compete in the important regional and national events. As a team, we have not yet broken through at that level, and that’s obviously the greater goal.”

Lance Baden Named Head Wrestling Coach at WPI

0

Worcester, MA – WPI Director of Physical Education, Recreation and Athletics, Dana L. Harmon, announced today the hiring of Lance Baden as the Head Wrestling Coach. Baden replaces Sean Nelligan, who takes over the role of lead assistant after guiding the team the last two seasons.

Baden returns to Boynton Hill after a Hall of Fame career as a wrestler and six years as an assistant coach from 2000-2006 under the tutelage of legendary coach Phil Grebinar and Nelligan.

“Lance has been an outstanding member of the WPI Wrestling family – first as a student-athlete, then as an assistant coach and now as our head coach,” said Harmon. “We look forward to him leading our program for many years.”

Baden ended his distinguished career at WPI as a two-time captain and was named an All-American in his sophomore year. He was also a two-time New England champion in two different weight classes; the 177-pound class as a sophomore and the 184-pound class as a senior. Baden was a four-time All-New England place winner and owns a 46-11 dual meet record for a .807 percentage.

“It’s great to be back with the program; It was really hard for me last year to be away from it,” stated Baden. “I was really honored when Sean and Dana asked me to come back and lead the program. I know that this team means the world to Sean and he is going to continue to be an integral part of our program as he will still be the key guy as far as teaching technique and developing the talent in our practice room.”

A major part of WPI record books, Baden is fourth in pins in one season (10), fifth in career pins (23), seventh in individual career points (233), eighth in dual wins (46), eighth in pin percentage in one season (.625), and ninth in career pin percentage (.404). He’s also third in consecutive pins in one season (5) and fourth in pins in less than one minute in his career (4).

“There’s nowhere else that I would want to coach,” stated Baden. “We’re highly motivated to get WPI back to the top of the division and develop as many New England Champions and All-Americans as possible.”

In high school, Baden won the state title as a senior at Framingham High and after placing third in the state in his junior year. He was also a two-time sectional champion and placed fifth in New England.

Before coaching at WPI, Baden was an assistant coach at MIT during the 1999-2000. Since 1999, he has worked as a project manager at Vanasse Hangen Brustlin, Inc, based in Watertown, MA. Baden has refereed as a high school referee since 1995 and currently serves on the Executive Board of the Massachusetts Interscholastic Wrestling Officials Association.

This year, Messiah College, along with Lycoming, joins the Empire Conference for the first time.  After getting Derek Ricker through the Midwest Region to the NCAA tournament last year, the 2007-2008 team will aim for the top of the podium against mostly New York schools.   Trent Zempel, a placewinner at 184 in the Region last year, returns to his more natural weight class of 165 and is joined by a strong group of light and middle weights.
