UW-La Crosse tops UW-Eau Claire in #3 vs #4 battle

UW-La Crosse won 30-12 over UW-Eau Claire in the sole DIII match last night, giving the Eagles their 37th straight victory over the Blugolds in a match between two tough teams.

Coming into the match, #3 UW-Eau Claire sat half a point ahead of #4 UW-La Crosse in the latest NWCA Divison III tournament rankings. Each team featured multiple wrestlers in the d3wrestle.com Rankings (wrestlers in bold competed last night).

Wrestler of the Week: Bradley Rosen

The d3wrestle.com Wrestler of the Week is Bradley Rosen of North Central College. Rosen won a tough 141 lbs. bracket at the North Central Invitational last weekend to help the Cardinals to a 2nd place team finish. The 7th-ranked Rosen, seeded 3rd in his weight class, won his first match by tech fall then defeated d3wrestle.com H.M. Blake McGee of Wabash 8-2. In the semifinals, he won by tech fall against #6 Dresden Grimm of Coe before recording a major decision against Contender Sam Lorenz of UW-La Crosse. For his efforts, Rosen was named CCIW Wrestler of the Week.

Rosen, a senior from Woodridge, Illinois, is currently 10-1 on the season and 65-21 for his career. He was a 2023 NCAA qualifier and Lower Midwest Regional champion at 141 lbs. and placed 4th at 125 lbs. at the 2021 NWCA D3 tournament. North Central will send a group to the Midlands at the end of the month before opening 2024 with a trip to the NWCA National Duals.

Wrestler of the Week: Pierre Baldwin

The d3wrestle.com Wrestler of the Week is Pierre Baldwin of Central College. The 141 lbs. wrestler went 5-0 last week winning a dual meet against Augustana as well as the championship at the MSOE Invitational. At MSOE, Baldwin defeated #1 ranked defending NCAA Champion Sam Stuhl of Augsburg 12-4 in the championship match to take the 141 title. Baldwin was named American Rivers Conference Wrestler of the Week for his efforts.

Baldwin, a sophomore from Carol Stream, Illinois, is now 18-1 on the year with championships at the Pointer and Millikin Opens to go along with last week’s MSOE championship. His career record is 41-8 after last year’s 23-7 record. Baldwin was 5th at the Lower Midwest Region and was the Central Wrestling Most Valuable Newcomer. Central is off this week and will end 2023 competition at the Nebraska Wesleyan Prairie Wolf Duals on December 16th.

Wrestler of the Week: Cooper Willis

The d3wrestle.com Wrestler of the Week is Cooper Willis of Augsburg. Willis won his home tournament, the Auggie Invitational, at 165 lbs. in a dominant performance. He opened with a tech fall and a fall before securing a 12-6 decision in the semifinals. That set up a match, for the second week in a row, against returning NCAA DII champion Chase Luensman of Upper Iowa. For the second week in a row, Willis came out on top, earning an 11-1 major decision to cap off his weekend and take the title.

Willis, a sophomore from Kansasville, Wisconsin, is now 8-1 on the season with his only loss coming to Iowa’s Michael Caliendo. Last season, Willis finished 2nd in the Upper Midwest Regional before taking 5th a the 2023 NCAA Championships. He compiled a 32-9 record and now has a 40-10 career record. Augsburg next competes tonight in a dual at UW-Eau Claire.
