Hasenfus head to Williams

4

Rich Hasenfus, formerly of Norwich University, has been named head coach at Williams College.  He replaces Dan DiCenzo, who left to coach football at Wesleyan.  Hasenfus was the head coach at Norwich for 13 seasons.  Over the past two years, he has spearheaded a fundraising effort that saved the Norwich team after the school announced it was dropping the program.  In his time at Norwich, he coached 15 NCAA qualifiers and two All-Americans.  He inherits a team with two returning All-Americans in Ryan Malo and Corey Paulish that recorded the program’s first ever 20 win season in 2009-2010.

Prior to his time at Norwich, Hasenfus was the head coach at Wesleyan for three seasons after spending some time as an assistant at Harvard.  Click below to see the full Williams release.

Also of note is the following:  this is the first time a Division III head coach has left to become the head coach at another Division III school since d3wrestle.com started tracking coaching changes in 2007.

Moulsoff named Augsburg wrestling top assistant coach

6/23/2010
Augsburg College Sports Information
MINNEAPOLIS — Jim Moulsoff, who has served the Augsburg College wrestling program as an assistant coach for the last three seasons, has been promoted to a full-time assistant coach position for the Auggies, the athletic department has announced.

Moulsoff replaces Jared Evans, who is leaving Augsburg to pursue other opportunities. Moulsoff will also have other duties within the Augsburg athletic department, which have yet to be announced.

“I’m very honored and appreciate the opportunity to be working with such an established wrestling program, and look forward to our continued success, continuing the pursuit of excellence that has been the hallmark of this program,” Moulsoff said.

Moulsoff has spent more than 20 years as a wrestling coach at the high school, amateur and collegiate levels. Prior to joining the Augsburg staff in 2007, Moulsoff spent 15 years as head coach of the Minnehaha Academy High School program. He spent three years as an assistant coach in Whapeton, N.D., before moving to Minnehaha Academy.

He also serves as the cadet director for Minnesota/USA Wrestling. Earlier this month, the Minnesota cadets won the national titles in both Greco-Roman and freestyle at the USA Wrestling Cadet National Duals in Rochester, Minn.

“I am very excited to have Jim on staff full-time. His experience and knowledge in the sport of wrestling will uphold the tradition of excellence in this program,” said Augsburg head coach Mark Matzek. “Jim is a technician and an avid student of the sport. In 2010, Jim has been an integral part of winning four national championships. He won the NWCA National Duals and the Division III national championship with Augsburg and has just come off winning the Cadet duals national championship in both Greco-Roman and freestyle as cadet director of Minnesota/USA Wrestling. Jim and I will be a great team, and I am looking forward to the years to come.”

Augsburg won its record-11th NCAA Division III national championship in 2010, claiming eight All-Americans and three national runner-up individuals. Augsburg extended its streak of “trophy finishes” – finishing in the top four in the team race – to 22 straight years, the longest active streak of any NCAA wrestling program, regardless of division. The Auggies went 12-0 in dual meets and claimed the National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III National Duals title in the 2009-10 season.

In Moulsoff’s three seasons, the Auggies have had national team finishes of third, second and first, while claiming 20 All-Americans and going 33-4 in dual meets.

Q&A With Tyler Erdman

1

Tyler Erdman has had a busy spring.  In March, he became Elizabethtown College’s first national finalist since 1977 and is only the third 2x All-American in school history.  With two years to go, he has a great chance to be the first ever 3x and 4x All-American for Elizabethtown.  He also made his first foray into Greco-Roman wrestling and competed in six tournaments while representing the newly-formed Modern Day Gladiators club.  He opened his Greco-Roman career with a 2nd place finish at the University Nationals, and followed up by competing in the U.S. Nationals, FILA Jr Nationals, Northeast Regional, FILA Jr World Team Trials, and Senior World Team Trials.  Competing at 55kg, he wrestled in 17 matches this spring, all in Greco-Roman.  d3wrestle.com had the chance to interview Tyler after he got back from the World Team Trials in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

d3wrestle.com: How has your training and competition this spring affected your desire to continue on in Greco-Roman wrestling after college?
Tyler Erdman: It has been fun and I plan on competing after college if possible. This was my first year ever actually focusing on greco so to have a good offseason and make the world team trials says a lot about my future in greco.

d3: In what ways has the training you’ve been doing prepared you for next season as you try to win an NCAA championship?
TE: The main thing is that i got plenty of matches, about 20, so that will help for the regular season on experience. My training has helped me with different techniques and attacks I can use on my opponents next year. Basically my greco training has made me a more dangerous competitor for my opponents.  My greco training has helped me improve on my feet. It has improved my hand fighting techniques and it has given certain upper body attacks that easily transition over to folkstyle. I would love to share exactly how they will help but I don’t want to ruin the surprise for my opponents next season.

d3: As a University and NCAA All-American, what would you tell someone if he asked you why he should train in greco-roman wrestling?
TE: It is a very fun style of wrestling and will help you learn about positioning while handfighting. It is much more laid back compared to folkstyle, but also very explosive and brutal. It is also the oldest style of wrestling and separates the manly men from other men….just ask Jim Gruenwald.

d3: Will you ever wrestle any freestyle?
TE: I thought about it and may wrestle freestyle at university nationals and the northeast regionals next year, but there is no way I am making 55kg 2 days in a row. I would go 60kg and have fun with it.

d3: Are you planning to take any breaks in your training before next season?
TE: Other then helping out at a couple wrestling camps I am going to take my wrestling shoes and locked them up in an iron safe for a couple weeks. I am going to keep lifting and running/conditioning but I need to take some time off from the mat to prevent burnout. Don’t get me wrong I love wrestling as much as every other die hard, but all wrestlers need their breaks and need to take the time to just have fun.

d3: Now that your greco competition is done for the year, when will you transition back to collegiate style wrestling?
TE: As soon as I finish my break then I will begin to transition back to folkstyle. I will still practice greco 1-2 days a week but my main focus will be on my collegiate style. I plan on using all my greco knowledge and moves with my folkstyle, particularly my gut wrench, I think that would be very effective in folkstyle wrestling. (editor’s note: haha)

d3: Any chance we’ll see you compete again before next season?
TE: I am looking at possibly competing at the Sunkist next fall. I am also looking at the NYAC tournament and possibly going overseas to do 1 or 2 international tournaments during break.

DIII takes its message to the media

The article linked below appeared on the NCAA web site.  It’s always good to promote Division III.  We might not get the same attention as Division I, but it’s always good to remember there are more DIII teams than DI teams and a lot more college wrestling teams outside of DI than in it.

Williams Job Reposted

Williams has reposted their head coach position and eliminated the requirement of also assisting with football.  This should open the applicant pool and help the team hire the best coach possible.  It is good for wrestling that this change was made, regardless of the reason.

Hall Tabbed as Head Wrestling Coach

Worcester, MA — WPI Director of Physical Education, Recreation and Athletics Dana L. Harmon announced today the hiring of Steve Hall as the Head Wrestling Coach.  Hall replaces Lance Baden and Rob Polin, who served as co-head coaches this past season.

Hall was standout heavyweight wrestler in the mid-1980’s for Hall of Fame coach Phil Grebinar.  He totaled a career record of 54-4-2 (.902 winning percentage) and is tied for fourth in dual-meet wins. The 296 team points he amassed places him second all-time while his 22 career pins is good enough for seventh.  Hall belongs to a rare group of WPI wrestlers who garnered four All-New England honors and he was a key part of WPI’s first two New England championship teams in 1985 and 1987.  He was inducted into the WPI Athletics Hall of Fame in September of 2008.

NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship Winners

Two Division III wrestlers were awarded NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships this year.  Only 29 male winter athletes in all of the NCAA were awarded these scholarships, making it a prestigious honor.  The Division III wrestlers are Rob Kramer of Coe and Jacob Gire of Trinity.

The scholarship is for $7,500 to be used toward graduate education.  Kramer, wrestling for Coe, was a two time All-American and set the Coe career record for falls while accumulating the second most wins in program history.  Gire was a four time NEWA placewinner, winning 93 matches in his career for the Bantams.
