Wrestler of the Week: Nazar Kulchytskyy

The d3wrestle.com/WWSport.com Wrestler of the Week is Nazar Kulchytskyy of UW-Oshkosh. Coming in as the #3 seed and the #3 ranked wrestler at 157, Kulchytskyy won the Pete Willson Wheaton Invitational with a fall, a pair of major decisions, and a 2-1 win over the #1 ranked wrestler and returning NCAA 3rd place finisher at his weight, Elias Larson of Trine. Kulchytskyy is now 36-1 on the season and is the new #1 at 157 in the latest d3wrestle.com Rankings.

Kulchytskyy moved from the Ukraine to Wisconsin during high school and put his name on the map with a freestyle win over current University of Minnesota starter Dylan Ness in an off-season tournament. He then matriculated to Oshkosh where he was 12-0 last year in an injury shortened season. Healthy this year, he has run his career record to 48-1. He is ranked 5th in the latest NCAA listing of most dominant wrestlers as determined by team points per match, tied for 4th in most falls with 14, and tied for 2nd in most tech falls with 8. Kulchytskyy and the Titans next compete tonight in a WIAC match against UW-Platteville before taking on UW-Eau Claire on Friday and the Eau Claire Invitational on Saturday.

Wrestler of the Week: TJ Wunnicke

The d3wrestle.com/WWSport.com Wrestler of the Week is TJ Wunnicke of UW-Platteville. In his first action of the new year, Wunnicke led the Pioneers to a 2-3 record at the Max Servies Duals at Wabash. During the event, Wunnicke recorded five first period falls in a total time of 7:53. The fastest of these five falls came in just 33 seconds against 2011 NCAA Qualifier Kalen Greiner of Central. Those five falls ran Wunnicke’s season record to 22-3.

Wunnicke is a junior in his first season with the Pioneers. He previously wrestled for Northern Illinois University and was a two time Wisconsin state champion in high school while also finishing 4th at the NHSCA Senior Nationals. The Dodgeville, Wisconsin, native is currently ranked 2nd at 133 lbs. in the NWCA Rankings that were released this week. He also has the most falls in Division III with 18 of his 22 victories coming by pin. Wunnicke and his teammates are wrestling today and tomorrow in the Pete Willson Wheaton Invitational.

Wrestler of the Week: Zach Thomson

The d3wrestle.com/WWSport.com Wrestler of the Week for the past week is Zach Thomson of Gettysburg College. Thomson competed with the Bullets at the NYU quad, taking on NYU, Plymouth State, and Elizabethtown in the 165 lb. class. He picked up a tech fall against Plymouth State and 9-3 decision over Elizabethtown’s Quint Eno, but in the first match of the day, Thomson defeated #3 ranked and previously undefeated David Rice of NYU in a big conference matchup. The three wins on the day ran Thomson’s record to 24-1.

Thomson, a freshman from Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, was a two time Pennsylvania AAA state qualifier and placed 3rd at 160 lbs. last year. This season, he has won titles at the King’s, Ursinus, and Oneonta tournaments while finishing as the runner-up at the Messiah Petrofes Invitational. He broke into the d3wrestle.com top ten for the first time this week and now sits at #4 at 165 lbs. Thomson and the Bullets will take on Ursinus and Muhlenberg in a home match this weekend before hosting McDaniel in another conference match on Wednesday.

Wrestler of the Week: Jules Doliscar

The d3wrestle.com/WWSport.com Wrestler of the Week for last week is Jules Doliscar of Ithaca. In his first year as a Bomber, Doliscar has had a great season, and he reached a new high at the NWCA National Duals where he defeated all four of his opponents to help lead the Bombers to a 4th place finish. Doliscar defeated wrestlers ranked 1st and 10th in the d3wrestle.com Rankings released just prior to the event. He defeated former NCAA Champion Mike Schmitz of UW-La Crosse by a 4-1 score and Danny Balderas of Elmhurst 13-3. He also won against Ryan Conat of UW-SP and Justin Bowland of Augsburg.

Doliscar is a junior college transfer from Nassau Community College who was a 2x NJCAA All-American before coming to Ithaca this season. He has twice placed in the NY State Collegiate Championships and is now ranked 1st in both the NWCA and d3wrestle.com Rankings at 174. This season, he is 22-2 with 15 falls. Both of his losses came in the Cornell Bodybar Invitational against Division I opponents. Doliscar and the Bombers head to Waynesburg for a dual tomorrow before the NY State Championships the following weekend.
