Coming off Whitewater’s back to back best seasons, the Warhawks look to improve again this year. The team has had some success and coming short of the goal is what drives them. With new head coach, Ned Shuck, and a group of good freshman the goal hasn’t changed. There are some leaders that have had success and want more, so they will need to bring the young guys with them. The Warhawks have a competitive schedule that let them see a lot of good competition through the year to get them ready for the post season.

Season outlook:
After a winning dual meet season which concluded with 8th place NCAA NE Regional Championships team finish, and 5 NCAA All-Regional wrestlers in 2014. The Red Dragons lost four senior starters to graduation, 2 of them 100+ match winners, and NCAA All-Regional Wrestlers. Despite those losses to graduation this year’s team should rebound nicely with a solid line-up. The team will be paced by three multiple time NCAA All-Regional, and multiple time All-Conference ECWC wrestlers in Hanson, Gillen, & Obzud all striving to conclude their careers with a trip to the NCAA Championships in Hershey PA. Dominic DeGraba (So.), and Curtis Rowley (Jr.) both All-Conference ECWC wrestlers, along with returning starters Evan Wallace, Anthony Marino, and Vincent Provenzano should provide additional veteran leadership to this year’s team. Several additional wrestlers are highly experienced, eager to fill the voids left by graduating teammates, and looking to make an impact this season. The incoming class boosts multiple State Qualifiers, State Placers, All- Sectional, and All-County grapplers several of whom will contend for starting positions in this year’s line-up. If all goes well the Red Dragons should blossom into a highly competitive team during the 2014-15 season.

Season outlook:
The 2014 season ended with JWU recording a school record best 8th place finish at the NCAA Nationals. The Wildcats recorded (3) All Americans (another school record). What was even more impressive was that JWU was 1st in the Largest Seed to Place Differential (Meaning,“The Most Underrated team at the NCAA’s”) and had the most pins (6) in the tournament, but that was last year….
Graduated is 2x All-American Colin Lenhardt. His presence will still be felt though as he has moved into a coaching position. All-American Everet Desilets, who has won World and Pan Am tournaments in Judo, will be taking the year off as he prepares for a Team USA Olympic birth. Returning are Senior All-American Michael Ferinde and Junior National Qualifier Joey Gaccione anchoring the Wildcat squad. The JWU team will be looking at no fewer then 7 new faces moving into the starting lineup this year. This will make for an interesting battle in the room. Along with the freshmen and transfers, upper class-men return and are poised to claim their spots. At 285 Jonah Aurelio at 21-10 with 11 falls should be the favorite as he knocked off a few National Qualifiers and All-Americans last year. Michael Labell will return at 174/184 after a season ending injury stopped him from going to the Big Show. Mike was ranked #1 in the NEWA Conference before the injury. Also returning from injury are 2x All-Region wrestler 165 Sean Prell ( 2nd and 5th) and 133/141 Justin Colon who was (17-9). Another returner is Ken Dougherty at 174/184 who was 31-12 a year ago. Things get heated up at 157 where there are plenty of challengers to Senior Andrew Stock. Andrew was 15-9 with 12 pins last year behind Desilets. The depth from 133-174 will be JWU’s strong point, as there will be potential All-Region wrestlers not able to crack the starting line-up.

Season outlook:
The Bluejays look to improve on their 17th place finish at the NCAA Championships. Gone are NCAA Champ Ryan Prater and qualifier Danny Balderas, but an experienced group of returners and talented class of newcomers should help the team improve upon last year’s results. Leading the returning group is 2013 All-American Miguel Venecia. After an injury filled 2014 campaign, a healthy Venecia looks to make it back on the podium. Also returning are regional placers and 2 year starters Nick Dinardo and Jim Spangler, along with the anticipated return of Alex Maynard, who missed the entire season due to a serious injury. All three look to be key parts of the lineup this season, along with Elmhurst’s “Freshman of the Year” Bobby Schillinger and Zack Urbanski, who has been biding his time the past 2 seasons behind talented upperclassmen.
