trying to generate some talk and opinion before nationals with this…I know many are upset about trouble with the qualifying system…well when it changes to regionals it won’t be much better..here’s why—
The regionals are set up to be lop-sided …right now the proposal is to have iowa conference and and great lakes conference join regions where there only 11 teams and conferences like empire and metro will join 18 team regions… meanwhile all regions will have the same amount of national bids where only top 3 go. This format was proposed by a former Augsburg coach (Swenson) and it is in my opinion that they are merely trying to line up the odds in their favor as they always have been. Soooo… 18 teams—30 qualifiers and 11 teams—30 qualifiers! You do the math..and tell me which teams end up on the higher end of the stick here. These sellfish administrators are going to be the people to ruin d-3 and it is my recommendation that this be heavily contested at the coaches meeting at nationals. They are basing it on historical data when the whole idea of regions was to get away from historical data… what gives? If this goes down, more and more programs will continue to be cut and fewer teams will have a shot at representation at nationals. Ultimately, this is going to put us back in the same boat, with guys like Rice from NYU having to stay home, all because teams like Augs. and Wart. want to take 10 guys and will stop at nothing to ensure it happens. I appreciate any supportive feedback on this!
Andy do you have the list of teams per region for this proposal?
ho about making all the regions even and letting the wrestlers decide who goes, not another bias qualifying system!
I agree…big travesty that Rice stays home and 2 other 165 lbrs got in through alternate bids
Bamboozled,
Please explain. Right now there are 15 teams in the Great Lakes Region and 9 in Iowa. Is there talk that they are joining into a super regional?
just shows from the stats the best college wrestlers r from ILLINOIS
If this is all true about the proposed regional format, is there any way to change the qualifying system? Can any coach or higher power out there push for more evenly distributed regions or a qualifying system based on RPI and coaches rankings (like they do in D1). I feel that every other division never really has this problem, a system that makes it much easier for previously good teams to stay good at the national level and way tougher for the weaker ones to achieve their goals, which more importantly results in many hard working athletes, that deserve to represent themselves at the big one, being left out to hang.
While I do admit that the conferences bringing the most to nationals, IIAC and Great Lakes to be specific, do deserve to bring the most kids, they bring plenty who could be replaced by better counterparts from weaker conferences. The 31 qualifiers they are allowed to bring is ridiculous.
Someone needs to push for a change
Illinois? Really? How about Pennsylvania? Unless you are talking top D III wrestlers, which may be the case, considering most of PA’s top wrestlers go Division I from Penn State to Iowa.
What are the proposed regional going to look like or at least suppose to look like for next season
Does it really matter. Look who has won the Diii championships, ummm I dont care last 15 or so years. Sorry Mr rice didnt make the cut but if the guys that beat him get beat by IIAC conference. You can take 10 wrestlers to the dance, they still have to win every match to be crowned. So does it really matter? I would wager any wrestler from Wartburg or Augsburg or even COE, all mid-west programs could go into almost any other conference and dominate like they do in theirs.
GO IIAC Wartburg and Coe. Guess throw in Augsburg, but the Knight RUNNING away with the title again!!!!
Andy,
Is there a list with year in school? I was wondering which guys won’t be back next year.
