This past season, Heidelberg finished 2nd in the OAC and sent three wrestlers to the NCAA Championships in La Crosse.

Heidelberg release announcing Shearer’s departure

Shearer will replace Gary Franke at Washington & Lee. Franke spent 38 years as the head coach of the Generals while also coaching the men’s tennis team from 1979-2000, winning the 1988 NCAA tennis championship. Franke is a member of the NCAA Division III wrestling committee and recently published an article about sportsmanship on d3wrestle.com and elsewhere. Washington & Lee has yet to make a formal announcement of Shearer’s hiring.

  1. Why didn’t Assistant Coach Bennett take over? He knows the ins and outs of the program. Nothing against the new coach, I just wasn’t expecting that.

  2. I agree W&L/Bennett was recruiting my son and a few others that attended jr football day this past sat at W&L , but if the new coach likes to fish he will get my sons attention. my son 28-5 in va beach 171/160 will wrestle in college at 171/189 rather had seen Nate Moorman from king college get the job now that dude has done a heck of a job at King

  3. Nothing against Coach Shearer, but Coach Bennett had my son and I very fired up about W&L and we were excited about wrestling for him and are disappointed that he won’t be at W&L anymore. I hope he stays in coaching!

  4. Congrats to Coach Shearer, I was at Ohio Northern with Nathan for 1 year as a teammate and then wrestled for him for 3 years while he was an assistant. He was a good wrestler, a great coach and is an even better person. I wish him nothing but the best and W&L found themselves a great addition to their program.
