2011 Seeds

2. Massey, Augsburg

4. Malo, Williams
5. Myhrberg, Cortland
6. Lutke, Centenary
7. Latella, UW-Whitewater
8. Karns, Delaware Valley
Returning All-Americans
Tate, Wartburg, 1st in 2010
Massey, Augsburg, 3rd in 2010, 1st in 2009
Schindel, Mount Union, 7th in 2010, 8th in 2009
Malo, Williams, 2nd in 2010, 2nd in 2009
Tate was a bit of a surprise champion after coming in as the 5th seed in a weight with both of the previous year’s finalists in the bracket, but he not only won the tournament, he defeated both of those finalists along the way. This year, he rolled from the opening whistle, winning the Harold Nichols Open and defeating the 2011 Big 12 runner up from Iowa State in the finals. He followed that up with a trip to the Midlands final and wins over both Massey and Malo during the regular season. It is hard to imagine him losing, though it was hard to imagine him beating Massey and Malo last season, and Malo did take him to overtime in their match this year.
Massey and Malo are a pair of Division I transfers who have had great success at the DIII level over the past three seasons. Both are two time finalists with Massey winning their lone head to head matchup. Malo stumbled a bit this year, losing a number of conference matches including two at the NEWA Championships. Some of that could be familiarity, as the NEWA wrestlers see a lot of each other throughout the year. Schindel is the remaining All-American. He has climbed from 8th in 2009 to 7th last year and should manage to take more than one more step up this season. A trio of newcomers fill up the bottom seeds as Myhrberg wrestled 184 last year, Lutke was previously at Edinboro, and Karns is a 2008 high school graduate who is a freshman this year at Delaware Valley.
Prediction: It is hard to pick against a Midlands finalist, so Tate gets the nod as he goes for his second title.

MALO GOT HELP FROM REFREE, IN HIS MATCH WITH TATE TOO SEND IT INTO OVERTIME. WITHIN 30 SECONDS TWO POINT WAS GIVIN TO MALO, HE HAD TWO ESCAPES THAT TATE GAVE AWAY TO HIM, TO TAKE HIM DOWN. COM’ON WRITER MORE RESEARCH.
TATE WAS ALSO A D1 WRESTLER RECRUIT THAT NEVERED WHEN TO A D1 PROGRAM, BUT CAN PLACE IN A D1 TOURAMENT. D3 WAS A GOOD FIT FOR HIM. PLACING ON TOP IS A WHERE HIM BELONGS, WITH THE REST LIKE MALO AND MASSEY. THEY ARE WHAT MAKES TOURAMENT WORTH THE ADMISSION.
Dont overlook this Karns kid from DelVal. He was a state runner up in PA, one of the toughest wrestling states in the nation. He also was a D1 prospect before injuring his knee his senior season. Dont be surprised if he makes a little noise at this years tournament.
Malo and Massey just didn’t have what it takes to wrestle D1 that is why they transferred, and sometimes that happens seasons are longer D1 by like a month that takes a toll on your body. Massey sat out for like 4 years or something like that after Wisconsin. Tate is D1 and should be no where else he is a freak and is worth the admission to watch. Should be a great finals match.
Lutke looked good @ metro, beat Karns 5-2, Myhrberg has also looked good this season, would not be surprised to see him place
Some of these guys are so old they ought to be on the senior circuit. How many years has Massey been around? Lutke has to be at least 24. Karns a freshman? What a laugh. And Malo? These guys go to D1, can’t cut it, drop out, then show up in D3 as old man beating up on kids. Must make them feel important after getting hammered in D1.
I like Mulligan to place.
L.O.L. OLDTIMERS, I HAVE TO AGREE WITH U. MASSEY IN MALO IS TOO OLD, TO BE BEATING UP ON KIDS. I FIGURE THEY SHOULD BE SOME WHERE COACHING,LIKE IN GRAMMAR SCHOOL. L.O.L. SHAME ON THEY’RE COACHES, FOR HAVING THEM ON THEY’RE TEAM. I THINK THEY SHOULD TRY D1, OOPS THEY DID N DIDN’T MAKE IT. LOL…
Tate will walk through this bracket. the kid is a FREAK. end of story. the match scores will be close, however, the matches themselves will not. MVP of the tournament will come from this bracket
WTF?? There’s something wrong with trying D1 and realizing it’s not for you? At least they gave it a shot.
and for age.. I don’t know about the other guys, but Malo was in high school in 2007. maybe my math skillz aint what yos iz… but I don’t think that makes him older than the typical college wrestler.
In college we wrestled against a number of kids who spent time in the military before college.. some must have been in their 30’s… gives them an advantage? not so much.
Hey Oldtimers and Too Old to Wrestle, you guys may be old physically, but your like, preteen emotionally. Try to be a little positive. Wrestlers at all levels work hard for the chance to make it to their national tourney.
Pretty sure I struck a nerve. Watched Massey get his senior citizen gift takedown today. Disgusting.
If you are talking about Massey’s “senior citizen gift takedown” against Schindel in the semis you are so right it was disgusting. In all my years of watching wrestling I have never seen anything so wrong. Schindel should have been in the finals against Tate.
The gift takedown is exactly what I was referring to. Schindel got screwed out of a title appearance. Massey lost the match, only to have it given to him by the officials. Both refs stood there and watched the entire action as it happened. The match was over. Only after the crowd started on them did they convene and come back and award the points. Terrible, terrible call. Schindel is a class act, and the refs screwed him. If Massey were half a man, he would have acknowledged Schindel, maybe raised his hand or something to show his respect. Of course, the old man is so greedy to get a title at any cost (or age), he didn’t do any such thing.
Thank you also has been.
Comments about age? Why would you start typing if you didn’t know the facts? Being a transfer doesn’t make you old…Malo is a young senior..21. So that makes your accusations even more ridiculous. Seriously? You had the nerve to say they couldn’t “cut it” at D1? A transfer doesn’t mean that it was because the wrestling was too tough. You have no idea the reason for their transfers and you had no right to say something that is just your assumption. Shame on you. As for grammar grammar school…i’d re-read your post.
