Wrestler of the Week: Jimmy McAuliffe

0

The d3wrestle.com Wrestler of the Week is Jimmy McAuliffe of Elmhurst. The Blue Jay won the 141 lbs. weight class at the CCIW Championships last Thursday and was named Outstanding Wrestler of the event. McAuliffe pinned his first two foes before defeating two time All-American and #6 ranked Chris Williams of Millikin in the finals 8-2. His championship was one of three for the Blue Jays and helped the team to a third place finish in the eight team field.

McAuliffe, a freshman from Burbank, Illinois, was 4th last year in the Illinois 3A state championships for Reavis High School. This season, he was 4th at Concordia, 1st at the Elmhurst Al Hanke Invitational, and 5th at Wheaton. He currently has a 17-3 record with seven falls in his first year as a Blue Jay. Elmhurst is off this week as they prepare for the Upper Midwest Regional to be held next weekend at Augsburg College.

Wrestler of the Week – Ryan Epps

0

Ryan Epps

The d3wrestle.com Wrestler of the Week is Ryan Epps of Augsburg. Epps wrestled in a pair of events last week, beginning with the annual Battle of the ‘Burgs between Wartburg and Augsburg. Epps turned around his only loss of the season in topping the previously #1 ranked Logan Thomsen of Wartburg 10-6. Epps followed up that big win by winning the 157 lbs. bracket at the Don Parker Open at Eau Claire.

Epps, a sophomore from Cannon Falls, Minnesota, is now 32-1 on the year and has ascended to the top spot in this week’s d3wrestle.com Rankings. He has won five tournaments this year, and his career record for the Auggies stands at 66-8. Last year, Epps finished in the round of 12 at the NCAA Championships and was the West Region champion at 149 lbs. Prior to Augsburg, Epps was a Junior National All-American in freestyle and Greco-Roman and was the 2016 Minnesota state 2A champion. Epps and the rest of the Augsburg team is set to travel to in-state foe St. John’s on Friday evening.

ICE26: Manchester coach Kevin Lake building and happy to be back at his alma mater

Kevin Lake’s decision to attend Manchester as a student-athlete hinged on two things — his sister and his father. While Lake considered himself an average wrestler, the legacy of his football-playing father and athletic prowess of his twin sister led Lake to wrestle at the Indiana school.

On Episode 26 of The Ice Hour, Lake, now the head wrestling coach at his alma mater, explains his journey coaching all around the country at the Division I, Division III and private sector led him back to the only job he’d leave Los Angeles for.

Hear about the goals Lake has for his Manchester Spartans wrestling program and how he is enjoying the life again as a Division III wrestling coach.

Wartburg vs. Augsburg Tonight – Watch Online

0

Wartburg will host Augsburg tonight at 8pm Eastern in the annual battle between the two schools. They are the only two teams to have won the NCAA championship since 1995 and are currently the top two ranked teams in Division III. Each team has won 13 NCAA team titles. Augsburg is #1 in the NWCA rankings while Wartburg holds the top spot in the d3wrestle.com Tournament Rankings. The teams met earlier this year in the finals of the NWCA National Duals with Augsburg taking a 21-17 victory. The teams split the ten matches, but a pair of pins for Augsburg helped seal the match.

Wrestler of the Week: Wesley Schultz

0

13697

The d3wrestle.com Wrestler of the Week is Wesley Schultz of La Crosse. Schultz competed in a pair of events at 197 last week for the Eagles, getting a pin against WIAC foe Platteville before this past weekend’s Pete Willson Wheaton Invitational. Schultz came in as the 5th seed and won the title in dramatic fashion. After a first day of the tournament that saw him avenge a loss from earlier in the season, Schultz faced Whitewater’s Jordan Newman, the returning NCAA Champion at 184 lbs., in the semifinals. He erased an early deficit and pinned the top ranked Newman in the third period. This set up a match with returning All-American Kyle Koser of Messiah. Schultz pinned the defending Wheaton champ in just one minute to take the title. For his efforts, Schultz was awarded the Outstanding Wrestler award.

Schultz, a senior from Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, is in his first year with the Eagles after spending last season at Wyoming. Previously, he was the 2016 NJCAA runner-up at 184 lbs. for Iowa Lakes Community College. This year at La Crosse, Schultz has compiled a 19-6 record and is currently the WIAC Wrestler of the Week. He was 4th at the Luther Open and 3rd at the Auggie-Adidas Invitational along with his Pete Willson championship. Schultz and the rest of the Eagles are next scheduled to compete Friday against Stevens Point to wrap up their conference dual meet schedule.
