Wrestling Rules Committee makes recommendations

0

Recommendations from the NCAA Wrestling Rules Committee were released today. The 2021-2022 season is a rule book year, so the committee has the opportunity to make significant changes that are only possible every other year. The exact wording of the new rules will have to wait for the Playing Rules Oversight Panel to accept or reject the recommendations of the committee and for the rule book to be published later this year.

There are eight rules recommendations for this year. The most impactful to the actual match itself is reconfiguring overtime. The first sudden victory period would double in length to two minutes. Also, a winner would be named at the end of the first set of tiebreakers if one wrestler had at least one second of riding time. Sala de pesas en Saugues, Halle Des Sports Intercommunale – (Haute-Loire) sildigra 120 mg círculo de halterofilia chateauroux – clubes deportivos (dirección).

The second recommendation involving the actual conduct of the match would allow the referee to correct timing errors when that referee has reasonable knowledge of the correction that needs to be made. This is almost certainly in part areaction to the match between Josh Heil of Campbell and Boo Lewallen of Oklahoma State in the Division I Championships this year. Scrub to about 11:30 in this video to see the controversy. The clock did not run for the last seven seconds of the match. When this was discovered, the seven seconds were re-wrestled, and the outcome of the match changed. The proposed rule will potentially allow the officials to adjust the clock if they have enough information to do so. Read the whole description here. It is not clear that this change would have affected that specific match, but officials will possibly now have more flexibility to correct timing issues.

There is one more recommendation that does not affect the match itself, but it will likely have the largest impact of those remaining. This recommendation will allow a wrestler to weigh-in at a higher weight class one time, and rather than using the 1.5% weight loss per week rule, compete at the lower weight class after five days elapse. The final wording will be important here as it is not clear what a “one-time exemption” refers to. Is it one time per season, or does it mean a wrestler can weigh in up a weight once, but not twice in a row?

Other recommendations are as follows:

  • Moving weigh-ins to two hours or sooner before the start time of each day of competition in multiday individual or team advancement tournaments (currently, the second day is a one hour weigh-in)
  • Allowing referee video reviews (no coach challenges) for extra matches when those matches are held in conjunction with dual meet competitions
  • Allowing a 1-pound weight allowance on the second day of competition for all instances of back-to-back official team competition (currently, the allowance is only granted for consecutive dual meets, not a dual followed by a tournament)
  • Allowing referee video reviews (no coach challenges) for open tournaments.
  • Defining, for the purposes of playing rules, that any event that allowed unattached wrestlers would be considered an open event

Lastly, the committee recommends continued education for coaches and officials regarding expectations and application of the neutral out-of-bounds stalling rule.

D3 Tournament first look 125-157

Here are the 125-157 pre-seeds for this week’s D3 College Championships in Pocono Manor, Pennsylvania. To be eligible for this tournament, wrestlers must either be currently in school or have qualified for the 2020 NCAA Championships. 141 is the best weight in the lower half with five 2019 or 2020 NCAA qualifiers in the bracket. 133 and 149 also have multiple former qualifiers.

While many of the teams with entered wrestlers did not compete this year or had very limited competition, others competed but did not attend the NWCA Championships in Iowa last month. Finally, there are the 2020 grads who were not on teams this year but are eligible to compete. They missed out on their last NCAA tournament, but they have the chance to wrestle one more college event this week.

Wrestling begins on Thursday at 9:00am Eastern.

Which rules matter? (published to InterMat)

0

If you missed it earlier this week, I wrote an article on InterMat about the J’Den Cox weigh-in situation at the Olympic Trials two weekends ago. Since it didn’t really fit here, I was happy to be able to publish it on InterMat.

Just before the Olympic Trials started in Fort Worth, news began to ripple through the crowd that J’den Cox had missed weight and would not compete in the tournament. As a returning medalist at the non-Olympic weight of 92kg, Cox had a bye into the semifinals at 97kg. Many had anticipated a Saturday night matchup between Cox, a two-time world champion and 86kg Olympic medalist, and Kyle Snyder, the defending Olympic champion at 97kg and a two-time world champion.

As more information became public, it emerged that Cox claimed he was told the wrong weigh-in time by his coach, USA Wrestling National Freestyle Developmental Coach Kevin Jackson. Weigh-ins ended at 8:00am, but Cox did not make weight until 8:13am, according to published reports. The tournament committee met and decided that Cox could not enter, since he did not make weight in the time allotted. (Quick aside: international weigh-ins work differently than college. In college, wrestlers must be in the weigh-in area when the weigh-in begins or they cannot weigh in. Internationally, there is a weigh-in window, and wrestlers can come at any time during that window. The window ends two hours before wrestling begins.)

Wrestling Rules Committee meets this week

0

The NCAA Wrestling Rules Committee is set to meet April 12-14 via video conference. The wrestling rule book is updated every other year, and the upcoming season is a rule book year. This means that there is the possibility, but no guarantee, of significant changes for the 2021-2022 season. Major changes in recent rule books include neutral danger, out of bounds stalling, and the five second drop down rule. The most recent rule book that was in effect for the 2019-2021 seasons did not make major changes compared to those that preceded it. Here is a list of the changes from the last rule book revision.

Coaches and administrators have the ability to submit rule change proposals, and the rules committee sends out annual surveys to coaches, conference commissioners, and officials regarding both the application of previous rule changes and potential new rules for upcoming season. Here are the results of the 2019-2020 survey. The survey this year was structured differently and asked respondents whether they would be for or against 18 possible rule changes. Some examples included making takedowns worth three points, shortening the match from seven to six minutes, and adding a step out point in neutral if a wrestler goes out of bounds with both feet.

There is no guarantee that any of the changes in the survey will go into effect, and even if the committee recommends changes, the Playing Rules Oversight Panel (PROP) has final say on whether or not changes go into effect. Usually, PROP rubber-stamps the committee’s changes, but several years ago, the rules committee proposed making headgear optional, and that rule did not make it into the final rule book.

There should be a press release in the next few weeks with the proposals put forth by the committee, and then later in June, PROP will meet to give final approval.

Wrestling Rules Committee
Composition: Nine members. Four members shall be from Division I, two members shall be from Division II, two members shall be from Division III and an additional member shall be a secretary-rules editor. Chuck Barbee is the secretary-rules editor for wrestling.

Due to COVID-19, the 2020 and 2021 NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships were canceled. In order to provide a championship experience, the NWCA DIII Leadership Group hosted a championship event in Coralville, Iowa March 12 and 13. Over 300 wrestlers from 34 teams participated in that event.

The Leadership Group felt that those who could not participate in the Coralville event should be given an opportunity to compete in a season-ending tournament, and the Pocono championship event was created. With the help of NUWAY, the event will provide an additional opportunity for deserving DIII wrestlers.

The registration deadline is April 20th, and any current Division III wrestler or 2020 NCAA DIII qualifier can participate: Register Here

Malave leaves Mount Union for CWRU

0
Josh Malave Head Shot and Coaching Shot

After five years leading his alma mater, Mount Union head coach Josh Malave has accepted the head coach position at nearby Case Western Reserve University. Malave coached the Purple Raiders to a pair of top ten NCAA finishes and was named Ohio Athletic Coach of the year in 2020. He coached a pair of NCAA champions in Jairod and Jordin James, six NCAA All-Americans, and five NWCA All-Americans (2020). He was a 2x NCAA qualifier for Mount Union and a 2012 All-American when he finished 7th at 141 lbs. Malave takes over for Danny Song who resigned after six seasons. He inherits a team that did not compete this season but will be back in action for 2021-22.

CWRU Names Josh Malave Head Wrestling Coach

Case Western Reserve University James C. Wyant Director of Athletics Amy Backus announced the hiring of Josh Malave as the Head Coach of the Spartans’ wrestling program.

“I am extremely grateful to Amy Backus and [Vice President for Student Affairs] Lou Stark for the opportunity to lead this storied program,” said Malave. “Additionally, I would like to thank the search committee and the entire CWRU team that took the time to meet with me. I would like to thank my wife, Jillian, for her support through this process and throughout my career. We are looking forward to building lifelong relationships at Case Western Reserve and becoming a part of the Spartan Family.”

DIII Results from Last Chance Qualifier

0

The Last Chance Qualifier took place this past weekend at Texas Wesleyan University in Fort Worth. The top two finishers in each of the three Olympic wrestling styles qualified to compete this Friday and Saturday in the 2021 Olympic Trials at Dickie’s Arena, also in Forth Worth. A group of former DIII wrestlers participated in both Greco-Roman and Freestyle.

Finals Results and Video

There are four former DIII wrestlers qualified for the Olympic Trials this week. All are in Greco-Roman. Leslie (Mike) Fuenffinger (Augsburg) is qualified at 60kg due to his win at the 2019 US Senior Nationals. Joe Rau (Elmhurst) qualified 87kg for the US at the Olympics and will await the champion of the challenge tournament for a best-of-3 series to determine the Olympic rep. In 2016, Rau won the trials, but the US did not qualify his weight. At 97kg, Eric Twohey (UW-La Crosse) qualified with his third place finish at the 2019 senior nationals, while Donny Longendyke (Augsburg) grabbed the fifth and final spot at 130kg at the same event.

Schreiner to move wrestling team to DIII

0

Schreiner University in Kerrville, Texas, will be moving its NCWA men’s wrestling team into Division III competition for the 2021-2022 season. The women’s team will also be a Division III program as women’s wrestling transitions from Emerging to Championship sport status in the NCAA over the next few years. Schreiner added wrestling for the 2018-2019 season and the men’s team has competed in the NCWA Championships. The women have recently competed in the NCWA, WCWA, and National Collegiate Championships.

The school first announced plans to start wrestling in the fall of 2017, and where they would compete was an immediate question. Schreiner is the only school in their conference with a wrestling team, and the nearest DIII programs are quite far away. University of the Ozarks is 614 miles away and all other schools are 800 miles or more from Kerrville. The team has competed against NCWA schools and non-DIII schools primarily in Texas and Oklahoma, with occasional trips further afield. They will likely adjust their schedule to get some more DIII competition before heading to a to-be-determined regional.

The announcement said that Schreiner will be the first NCAA wrestling team in Texas, but that is not entirely accurate. Schreiner will be the only current NCAA team in Texas, but ten other NCAA schools in the state have previously competed in wrestling, including current DIII schools Southwestern and LeTourneau (according to the Mat Talk Online Dropped College Wrestling Teams database)
