Cael Krueger, Wartburg

184 is a deep weight with nine returning regional placewinners as well as some excellent newcomers. Detwiler was an undefeated #2 seed last year and a 2019 NCAA qualifier. Liegel is 9-1 with his only loss coming to start the year at Iowa State. Stevens was the Southeast runner-up and has only lost to Clarion so far.

Schott has wins over Krueger, Kuehn, and McBride and only lost to Liegel this season. Montford won the CCIW and has beaten Vandenbush, Brittain, and O’Donnell. The ARC shakes out pretty well in order with Schott, Krueger, Kuehn, and McBride. Rogge has not seen any of the other expected entries but is undefeated.

George Moseley, Averett – 3rd 2020 SE Region (184)

Alexander Skaare, Concordia Moorhead – 7th 2020 UM Region (165)
Tristin Westphal, Coe – 5th 2020 LM Region
Drew Matticks, MSOE
John Marsh, Cornell

Briggs got the year off to a great start with a win over Iowa state and then proceeded to get bonus points in every match since, including an 8-0 victory over Krakow, the other 2019 All-American in this bracket. Moseley qualified at 184 last year and dropped to 174 for 2021. He met up with 2x qualifier Shermeyer in a recent dual, and Shermeyer came away with a win by fall. Nielsen is also a 2x qualifier who was the #3 seed at the 2020 championships.

Westphal was a regional placewinner in 2020. Matticks is undefeated so far and won the CCIW Championship. Skaare has only wrestled once, but he placed in the region a weight class down last year. Marsh is undefeated, though he has not seen any of the other contenders yet.

Returning NCAA Qualifiers
Bradan Birt, Millikin – 2020 LM Region Champion, 2x All-American
Philip Rogers, Coast Guard – 2020 NE Region Champion

Casey Allen, Cornell – 7th 2020 LM Region (157)
Morgan Peterson, Southern Virginia – 7th 2020 SE Region
Zane Mulder, Wartburg
Alex Turley, Averett
Ryker Kurimski, Coe

Birt is one of the more decorated wrestlers in the tournament with 2018 and 2019 All-American awards. He was the #2 seed last season at this weight and is certainly one of the favorites to win in Iowa. Rogers won consecutive 1-0 matches in the quarters and semis at last year’s region before getting a fall in the finals.

Mulder transferred to Wartburg from Iowa State and has not been seriously challenged, save for a close win against Iowa State to start the season. He majored Anderson and Kurimski and pinned Roman this season. Anderson and Roman missed out on qualifying last year by one match each. Pangle was 5th in the region last year but has a loss to Turley, who avenged his only loss of the year already.

Hollingsworth and Henderson have wins over Ruiz, and Hollingsworth took the matchup with Henderson. The former Iowa Lakes and Alderson Broaddus wrestler has only lost to Iowa State’s Carr this season. Boggiano is a 2020 New Jersey state champ with a win over Barnhart this season. Birt is a CCIW champ who placed in the region last year. Shilson is a UT-Chattanooga transfer who is undefeated so far and is the brother of Augsburg’s Emily Shilson, one of the top college wrestlers on the women’s side.

Wartburg defeated North Central in a battle between ranked schools, Messiah ended Averett’s ten match winning streak, and UW-La Crosse won seven weights and the team title at the WIAC Championships, while Alvernia and Washington & Lee each wrestled their first matches of the year.

UW-La Crosse won their 5th WIAC championships in a row and 20th overall, outpacing second place UW-Eau Claire by 26.5 points. Konrad Ernst won the Max Sparger Scholar-Athlete award. It was the last competition of the season for the five WIAC teams in attendance.

#1 Wartburg jumped out to a 24-3 lead over #12 North Central before holding on for a 24-13 victory. All three ranked matchups went to the higher ranked wrestler as #6 Kyner topped #10 Rosen, #3 Mulder beat #7 Roman, and #5 Baldridge prevailed over #6 Woods.

Averett’s ten match winning streak came to an end in a 24-21 setback to Messiah. The teams split ten bouts, but three falls from Messiah made the difference, including #7 Brian Shermeyer pinning fellow 2020 NCAA qualifier #8 George Moseley.

The next two weeks are more limited in competition as teams wrap up their seasons and 35 or so teams prepare for the NWCA Division III Championships March 12-13.
