Seven make Academic All-American

Seven wrestlers made either the first, second, or third Capital One Academic All-America team that was announced last week. The first team is headlined by 2013 NCAA Champion Adam Sheley of UW-La Crosse and 2013 All-American Josh Etzel of Washington and Jefferson. Nathan Fitzenreider of North Central, Cody Lovejoy of Ohio Northern, and Matt McCrary of Wheaton are all second team members, while Kevin O’Brien of UW-La Crosse and J.D. Zitone of Centenary made the third team. Fitzenreider, O’Brien, and Zitone were also NCAA All-Americans in 2013.

National Duals Moving to Des Moines

After two years in Springfield, Illinois, the NWCA National Duals are moving to the Iowa Events Center in Des Moines. Since 2012, the National Duals has included teams from NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III, NJCAA, NAIA, and WCWA. The event will take place January 11-12, 2014.

CHICAGO– Saturday, May 18 was the annual Wartburg Outfly at the Chicago Cubs game.

Wartburg alum Scott D’Agostino secretly arranged for retiring wrestling coach Jim Miller to throw out the ceremonial first pitch.

Miller was given a customized number 10 jersey (signifying Wartburg’s 10 National Championships) that had to receive permission from the Cubs as that number is Ron Santo’s retired number.

Head Wrestling Coach: The person selected will be involved in all aspects of coaching an NCAA Division III sport which will include coaching, scheduling, recruiting, training, budget management, student-athlete development and related duties. Previous college coaching experience and/or wrestling experience at a major college program is highly preferred.

Assistant Director of Recreational Services: The person selected will be responsible for hiring, training, supervising, scheduling and evaluating the student staff in all areas of the Kern Center; assisting with both campus special events and outside rentals to include coordination and event coverage; and administering and providing leadership in the development of fitness programming for all users of the Kern Center.

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Plymouth State University has introduced a new head wrestling coach for the 2013-14 season.

Ryan Schieding has been named the new head wrestling coach at Plymouth State. Schieding is a former standout wrestler at PSU who previously served one season as an assistant coach for the Panthers. He has been the head wrestling coach at Memorial High School in Manchester, N.H., since 2009.

“I am very excited about being selected for the coaching position at Plymouth State,” said Schieding. “I’d like to thank my two college coaches, Jason Holder and especially Tommy Prairie for helping me get here. I’m excited for the season and the challenge of taking over a new team, as well as bringing Plymouth wrestling back to being a conference contending team. Being a former Plymouth State wrestler myself it’s a great feeling to come back to my former school and be in the position that I am. We have a young team with a lot of promise and should make for a fun season.”

A native of Manchester, N.H./Memorial H.S., Schieding was a four-year wrestler and two-year co-captain for the Panthers from 2004-08, posting a 62-47 overall record. He was 17-13 in the 157-pound weight class as a junior, and went 23-10 at 174 pounds as a senior, earning All-New England honors with a fifth-place performance at the New England Championships. Schieding was also an assistant coach for the Panthers under Tommy Prairie in 2008-09.

“We are excited to name Ryan Schieding as our new wrestling coach,” said PSU Director of Athletics John P. Clark. “We know Ryan takes great pride in returning to his alma mater, and we look forward to watching him and working with him to build our wrestling program. He has great knowledge of the sport and a lot of positive energy and enthusiasm, and we know our student-athletes are now in good hands.”

Honecker drops interim tag

Scott Honecker spent the 2012-2013 season as the interim head coach at Williams College where he coached three NCAA qualifiers and a pair of All-Americans while winning the Rookie Coach of the Year award from the NWCA. This week, Williams removed the interim tag, making Honecker the permanent head coach. 2013-2014 will be Honecker’s third season at Williams after spending one year as the assistant and last year as the interim head coach. Former Delaware Valley College wrestling coach Robert Marshall has been inducted into the Middle Atlantic Conference Hall of Fame’s second class. Marshall won 363 matches at Delware Valley in 28 seasons at Delware Valley, coaching seven NCAA champions and 42 All-Americans. See the Delware Valley release below

FORMER DELVAL WRESTLING COACH ROBERT MARSHALL ELECTED TO SECOND MAC HALL OF FAME CLASS

ANNVILLE (PA) – Former Delaware Valley College wrestling coach Robert Marshall has been elected to the second class of the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Hall of Fame, as announced earlier this week at the conference’s annual awards lunch.

The MAC introduced its Hall of Fame as part of its 100th anniversary kickoff in May of 2012. The inaugural class consisted of 36 honorees that were selected from current and former conference members. The second class features 18 inductees, including Marshall whose accomplishments as a coach place him among the best in the history of Division III wrestling.

Marshall compiled a 400-104-7 record in 35 years of coaching, including a 363-67-0 mark and 10 MAC championships in 28 years with the Aggies. At the time of his retirement in 2002, he was just one of three coaching in Division III wrestling history to reach the 400-win plateau while his .790 winning percentage ranked third all-time.

Marshall never suffered a losing season at Delaware Valley as he had 27 winnings campaigns and one .500 mark. He posted 22 straight winning seasons from 1980-81 to 2001-02, including three undefeated years. One of those seasons was 1988-89 when the Aggies went 18-0 and was ranked first in the country during the regular season. Four wrestlers qualified for the NCAA Championships and three were crowned national champions as Delaware Valley finished as the runner-up to Ithaca (which had seven national qualifiers).

In total, Marshall coached seven national champions as well as 42 All-Americans, 14 Scholar All-Americans and 83 MAC champions. He was named the MAC Coach of the Year on five occasions and was even featured in Sports Illustrated’s Faces In The Crowd in March of 2002.

The MAC enshrinement marks the ninth Hall of Fame that Marshall has become part of. He is already a member of the Purdue University Hall of Fame (where he was a three-time Division I All-American as a wrestler), the Burgettstown High School Hall of Fame (where he was a state champion), the NCAA Division III National Wrestling Coaches Association Hall of Fame (1995), the Pennsylvania Wrestling Hall of Fame (1997), the Southwestern Pennsylvania Wrestling Hall of Fame (1998), the Delaware Valley College Hall of Fame (2001), the Southeast Pennsylvania Wrestling Hall of Fame (2002) and the Washington County Hall of Fame (2002).

These days, Marshall spends his time with his two children (son Troy and daughter Tracy who both graduated from Delaware Valley College) and four grandchildren (Chase, Kai, Addison and Aubree).

Alfred State Accepted into NCAA

Alfred State College has been accepted into NCAA Division III competition. Previously, the school competed in the NJCAA. 2013-2014 will mark the first year of a four year transition period during which Alfred State will compete against NCAA competition but will not be eligible for the postseason. Other teams have typically competed in the NCWA Championships during the transition period, but there has not been an official announcement of that for the wrestling team. The Director of Athletics at Alfred State is Daryl Arroyo, who spent two decades as the head coach at Springfield College before taking the helm at Alfred State in 2011. This past season, Alfred State sent two wrestlers to the NJCAA Championships and placed 4th in the District tournament.

DelVal Wrestling Coach Steve Cantrell to become next Athletic Director

DOYLESTOWN, Pa., — (4/25/13) — Delaware Valley College announced the appointment of Steve Cantrell, the College’s wrestling coach since 2011, as athletic director.

Cantrell, a graduate of the United States Naval Academy where he also wrestled, received his MBA from National University and is a PhD candidate in environmental economics from the University of Maryland. Prior to becoming the wrestling coach at DelVal, Cantrell served as assistant wrestling coach at the United States Naval Academy.

“Steve will bring a tremendous strength of leadership and character to the role as athletic director,” said College president Dr. Joseph S. Brosnan. “He will play a key role in continuing to build on the success of the College’s athletic programs.”

Cantrell has served as an economics professor at both the United States Naval Academy and DelVal, and will continue to teach and coach in his new role. In his two years coaching wrestling at DelVal, Cantrell has an overall record of 19-14 and has had two Scholar All-Americans, four All-Americans and eight national qualifiers.

“I am honored and humbled to serve as the athletic director for an institution that I‘ve grown to love already,” Cantrell said. “I’m very excited about the potential and am going to work extremely hard to building on the legacy that Frank has created.” Cantrell replaces Frank Wolfgang who will be leaving the College at the end of the academic year after a storied 45-year career as former baseball and basketball coach and, for the past 26 years, athletic director.

Cantrell retired from the United States Marine Corp as a Lt. Colonel after 25 years of service as a combat pilot. He also has extensive experience in the private sector, having served as vice president of operations for four years with Worth & Company, Inc. and, as president of the Spartan Consulting Group. With this experience, Cantrell was named project manager for the construction of the Life Sciences Building, due to be complete in January 2014.

Division III Cultural Exchange – Spots Available!

The DIII Cultural Exchange trip is still open and will remain open for another month. The cost is $2650 but requires an immediate $500 deposit to purchase the ticket. The dates are June 19th flight out of New York City into Sofia, Bulgaria. We will spend the first half of the trip in Sofia and Plovidv Bulgaria. The second half of the trip will be in Istanbul, Turkey. We will train and compete in freestyle club duals in each of the three cities. The return flight is from Istanbul to New York City on June 29th.

We currently have an 18 person team that will be led by Head Coach Bill Racich of Ursinus College. Pat Curry will be the Assistant Coach on the trip and Tom Corey is the athletic trainer and team photographer. 2013 Wrestler of the Year: Nazar Kulchytskyy

The 2013 d3wrestle.com Wrestler of the Year is Nazar Kulchytskyy of UW-Oshkosh. Kulchytskyy, a junior, won the 165 lbs. NCAA Championship, adding to his 157 lb. title from 2012. After an overtime scare in the first round, he put together three solid wins in a row to cap a 44-1 season and win the title from the #2 seed. Kulchytskyy is now 103-3 for his career with his senior season yet to go.

In 2012-2013, Kulchytskyy led the NCAA in falls with 24, to along with 8 tech falls, and was given the NCAA Division III Most Dominant award at the conclusion of the NCAA Championships. He was the champion of the Muskie Invitational, MSOE Invitational, Dan Gable Open, Matman Invitational, Pete Willson Wheaton Invitational, West Region, and NCAA Championships. His only loss came in the finals of the Pointer Open against Wisconsin redshirt Isaac Jordan. After that loss, he reeled off 39 wins in a row to take the championship in Cedar Rapids.

Kulchytskyy, a native of the Ukraine, returns next year seeking his third straight NCAA championship. For his efforts this year, he was named the WIAC Co-Wrestler of the Year, and has now also been named the 2013 d3wrestle.com Wrestler of the Year. Congratulations to Nazar Kulchytskyy and the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh.

2013 Coach of the Year: Steve Marianetti

The 2013 d3wrestle.com Coach of the Year is Steve Marianetti of Elmhurst. Marianetti just completed his 11th and best season at Elmhurst College, coaching the Blue Jays to a 2nd place finish in the NCAA Championships and crowning a program best five All-Americans along the way. Joe Rau and Mike Benefiel became the 2nd and 3rd NCAA Champions from Elmhurst, and Marianetti was named the NWCA Division III Coach of the Year for the second time at the championships.

Elmhurst finished the season with a 12-1 dual meet record, losing only to NCAA Champion Wartburg in the finals of the National Duals. They won their own Al Hanke Invitational and the CCIW Championships while finishing second at the Midwest Regional. All five of their NCAA qualifiers landed on the All-American podium in Cedar Rapids.

Marianetti has been at Elmhurst for since 2002 and has put up a dual meet record of 102-42-2 in 11 season. He has coached three NCAA Champions, 22 All-Americans, and 35 NCAA qualifiers. Elmhurst has won six CCIW championships during his tenure and placed in the NCAA top ten six times. Congratulations to Coach Marianetti on being named the d3wrestle.com Coach of the Year for 2013.

The d3wrestle.com Freshman of the Year for 2013 is Josh Thomson of Messiah. Thomson finished his inaugural campaign with an outstanding 40-3 record and a 3rd place finish at the NCAA Championships. In those 40 wins were 10 falls and 9 major decisions. He was the champion of the Empire Conference and the Mideast Regional. He tied for the highest finish for a freshman this year and was one of just three freshman semifinalists at the NCAA Championships. Thomson also had the highest winning percentage (93%) of any freshman national qualifier.

Thomson attended Mechanicsburg Area High School where he placed 4th in the 2012 Pennsylvania AAA State Championships at 182 lbs. His brother Zach, a sophomore at Gettysburg College, also placed 3rd in the 2013 NCAA Championships at 174 lbs. Josh is the highest placewinner for Messiah since 2001.
