Season outlook:
With seven starters returning, St. John’s is in good shape heading into 2013-2014. The team was third in a top-heavy West Region and looks to beat that this season. Half of the six 2013 qualifiers are gone, as well as their lone All-American Mitch Hagen, leaving a lot of responsibility to returning qualifiers Ryan Arne, Ryan Michaelis, and John Scepaniak. Arne and Scepaniak each picked up a win at the tournament, but they will need to do more this year if St. John’s is to move up from 18th place.  Dalton Sowers and Josh Willaert each came a match away from qualifying, so it won’t take much of a step up from them to make the trip to Cedar Rapids in March.

Season outlook:
Johns Hopkins returns a veteran lineup that will bring a lot of experience to bear in 2013-2014. This team has finished first or second at the Centennial Championships each of the past three seasons. Even though the team graduated its only All-American from last year in runner-up Paul Marcello, 2012 All-American and 2013 qualifier Paul Bewak remains, as does 2012 qualifier Henry Stauber. 2012 All-American at 197 Reid Mosquera missed all of last season with an injury, but he hopes to return by the second half of this year to give the Blue Jays a trio of former NCAA qualifiers to go along with Kyle Spangler and Ray Yagloski who both finished one place away from from going to the NCAA Championships last March. The team should again be able to challenge for the conference championship.

Season outlook:
After surprising some and bringing home the Mideast Region title last year, Elizabethtown will return almost the exact same lineup as last year in an attempt to repeat the feat. Of their five NCAA qualifiers from 2013, only Phil Landis has graduated, leaving All-Americans Julian Meaney and Jeremy Rieth, along with qualifiers Chad Lammer and Jesse Meaney. In addition, Zeke Zimmer placed fourth  in the region and should be a contender to qualify in 2014. If the Blue Jays can put their best lineup on the mat on most days, they will be very tough to beat if they get a season-long performance similar to what they got at the end of last year.

Season outlook:
As Head Coach Steve Cantrell also takes on the role of Athletic Director at Delaware Valley, he is also faced with replacing three NCAA qualifiers in his lineup, but he will have his top finisher from last year back in Aaron Karns, a semifinalist at the NCAA Championships. Also back is Dallas Winston who was third in the East Region. Helping ease the transition should be transfer Vinny Fava who started at 141 for Rider last season but could be at 149 this year. Also, Hank Stinson looks to return to the Aggie lineup. The one time Penn State recruit wrestled seven times at 141 in the 2012 season but missed last year. He could return this season at 157 to give Delaware Valley a solid 1-2 punch at 149 and 157. Mike Boardman was a regional placewinner last year, but he could be challenged by incoming freshman and Virginia state champ Zach Roseberry.

Season Outlook:
Second year head coach Mark Hawald continues his rebuilding process at Case after a successful tenure at Mount Union. Josh Hall just missed going to the 2013 NCAA Championships at 125 when he was forced to default in the consolation finals at the Mideast Regional to the wrestler he had defeated earlier in the quarterfinals. With Hall only a sophomore and the real strength of the team coming from this year’s incoming class, the future is where the most success will come for the Spartans. That said, the freshmen on the roster will get a lot of experience in the starting lineup and could improve rapidly. Last season was the first without an All-American at Case since 2007, and Hawald is hoping to start a new streak soon.

Season outlook:
NYU had a great dual meet season, finishing 15-1 on the strength of solid depth and a lineup with few weak spots. The midyear transfer of former Iowa State wrestler Brandon Jones was a big boost, as he was undefeated until the NCAA Championships where he placed 5th at 133. He will likely be at 141 for 2013-2014, however. Also making it to Cedar Rapids was Patrick Sheehan at 184 but came up one match short of placing. Both Jones and Sheehan return to make another run. Matt DiGiovanni and Anthony Chu also placed at the regional, while Corbin Lee won over 20 matches before Jones bumped him out of the lineup. If Jones is at 141, Lee can get back in at 133. A good recruiting class brought in some likely starters, so NYU is set for another strong season.

Season outlook:
The Warhawks are coming off of their best season in school history with a 3rd place NCAA finish, Midwest Regional Championship and back to back WIAC Championships. The loss of four NCAA qualifiers will be tough, but returning qualifier Perkin and All-Americans Gibson (returning 2nd semester), Siefert, and Edgren are all back with NCAA experience. The team is well-situated to have another good regional tournament, but national success will depend on the development wrestlers like 30 match winner Matt Adcock and a tough incoming class featuring at least 8 state placewinners. Expectations are high for a team that has eyes on another trophy in March.

A solid group of freshmen, including three state placewinners, may step in and contribute right away to help send Lakeland back to the NCAA Championships.

Season Outlook:
With as many as nine starter left, John Carroll is poised for improvement in 2013-2014. Both of their NCAA qualifiers, Dan Mirman and Terner Gott, return with their eyes set on making the podium this March. Both were regional finalists at 149 and 157, respectively, with Gott taking the 157 title to become a 2x qualifier. John Carroll’s third regional placewinner was Will Porter at 285. The team will be counting on the rest of the lineup to build on last year’s experience to improve individual and team records this season. Gott and Mirman are the headliners, and a strong group of Ohio state qualifiers joins the team to challenge the incumbents for time in the lineup.

Season outlook:
Augsburg narrowly avoided dropping out of the top ten at the NCAA tournament for the first time since 1987, but Chad Johnson’s repeat championship at 285 and a pair of 7th place finishers helped them outdistance 11th place Concordia by 14 points. It was an off season only by the remarkable standards set by the program’s success over the past two decades plus of excellence. With four returning All-Americans, including 2012 placewinner Will Keeter, and three other qualifiers, the Auggies are poised for a bounce-back year. Add to that group their typical large and talented incoming class, and 2014 should be another good season in Minneapolis.

Season outlook:
With four returning NCAA All-Americans and one new NJCAA All-American, Cortland is primed to have another good season and challenge for a trophy at the NCAA Championships. Even with some injuries to key contributors last season, the Red Dragons still finished in the top ten. Bobby Dierna is the top returner after a 3rd place finish at 149, and he will be a contender for the title in 2014. Lou Puca is the other returning 2013 All-American who will be in the mix for the 174 title with 4 of the top 5 finishers last year gone at that weight. A trio of 2012 All-Americans in Bistis, Giaramita (down to 197 from 285), and NJCAA transfer Lance Moore give the team half a lineup worth of All-Americans. That group of five does not even include 184 Tyler Beckwith, who is as talented as any of these guys but had his season ended with a January injury. Add in other returners and their usual large recruiting class, and Cortland is looking good for 2013-2014.

Season outlook:
Wheaton should be able to put a full lineup on the mat for the first time in a little while, and that lineup has some experience. Dan Olsen returns after an All-American finish a year ago and a trip to the University World Championships in Greco-Roman. Mark Savenok has shown flashes of brilliance and has the talent to hang with anyone. Matt McCrary has gotten wins over NCAA qualifiers, and will be aiming for more consistency this year. Mitch Steed should settle into his natural weight of 197 after finishing last year as an undersized heavyweight. With a solid core, Wheaton could have their first winning record in a long time if the newcomers to the lineup can supplement the talent that is already there.

Season outlook:
Last year, Williams relied on a young team bolstered by a pair of senior national qualifiers, including All-American Ces Antista. With only 1 senior and 2 juniors, the 2013-2014 Ephs team will do more of the same but with a solid sophomore class. All-American Jorge Lopez returns as their only regional placewinner but will move up to 157 seeking an encore of last year’s 6th place national finish. Classmate Tim Garripoli will switch weights with Lopez and head down to 149. The incoming class has a couple of highlights in New England champion Chris Chorzepa and PA AAA placewinner Martin Strenk. Both hope to be able to contribute right away. As with any young team, the success of this group will depend on how the sophomores on the team adjust to their second full year of NCAA competition.

Season outlook:
Trine took three to the NCAA Championships last season, and Elias Larson ended his career as a three-time All-American. Ryan Pieper qualified at 174 but has also graduated, leaving Brandon Preston as the only returning qualifier on what promises to be a young team. Preston moves up to 133 for his junior year and will be looking to repeat as a Midwest Regional champion in 2014.  Outside of upperclassmen like Preston and Mack Green (moving to 285 this year), the team will feature as many as seven freshman and sophomores in the lineup as Trine enters their tenth year of varsity competition.

Season Outlook:
Wilkes returns five national qualifiers and a list of talented freshman/transfers that will add depth to the Colonel lineup in 2013-14. Kris Krawchuk was the East Region runner-up last year, but he followed that up with a matching runner-up finish at the national tournament. He will be back in the lineup in January. Mark Hartenstine was the #3 seed in Cedar Rapids and also returns. The Colonels were selected to participate in the National Duals in Iowa in early January and will get a good test against the nation’s best teams. Wilkes is currently on a 19 match winning streak they they hope to continue when they host the John Reese Duals the second week of the season.

With all three NCAA qualifiers from last year graduating, Stevens Point will look to the six returning starters to led the team into 2013-2014. Upper weights Dustin Wozniak and Jordan Koranda both had big seasons with Wozniak finishing 4th in a region featuring the 1st and 4th place NCAA finishers and Koranda leading the nation in falls for most of the season before an injury ended his season at the regional. St. Cloud transfer Jared Kust should step in and make an impact right away along with a large freshman class who will gain experience behind a lineup that could have at least six junior or senior starters.

Season outlook:
A very young squad who graduated nearly 10 wrestlers looks to make an early impact with both fresh and familiar faces. A familiar face in a new role is head coach Chris Mazzatta. An assistant with the program since 2010, Mazzatta now steps in to lead the program for 2013-2014. Led by returners Jesse Bader and Leon Bodden and new transfers Stephen Drew and Andrew Traficante, the Hawks will look to improve on last year’s dual meet record and East Region finish. The Hawks also brought in a couple of new faces on the coaching staff, including D-3 All-American from Cortland, Dave Colagiovanni and RIT alum, Jason Wake.

Bridgewater State will enter this season with a very young team. With over 20 newcomers look for BSU’s lineup to look a lot different and much improved from last season. One familiar face will be senior captain Ricky Caruso who missed the 2013 season with an injury, but he is back healthy and looking to make a run at All-American this season. BSU also added a new coach, Jim Quinlan, the all-time wins leader at BSU and a national qualifier in 2008. The success of the Bears in 2014 will depend on how quickly the freshmen progress.

A tough IIAC and Central region will challenge the Storm, but the future is coming.

Season outlook:
Southern Maine put together a winning season in 2013, but they will rely on a lot of new faces if they want to repeat the feat in 2014. Returning to lead the team are a pair of upper weight regional placewinners in Sean Fagan who was 4th and Jonathan Deupree who was 5th. Additionally, 2012 NEWA placewinner Dan Suarez returns at 285, giving the Huskies a strong top end of the lineup. Highlighting the newcomers are three New England placewinners including 2x New England runner-up Daniel Del Gallo. He, along with the rest of the team will be looking to make a return trip to the NCAA Championships after just missing out in 2013.
