MacMurray College to revive its wrestling program

0

MacMurray College in Jacksonville, Illinois, has announced today that the school will again sponsor wrestling for the 2016-2017 season. The school last sponsored the sport in 2007. MacMurray will also be adding a women’s wrestling program. Read on for the release from MacMurray.

Wrestling returns to MacMurray

MacMurray College will launch men’s and women’s wrestling programs during the winter season of 2016-17, resuming a men’s program that was one of the most successful sports in MacMurray history and launching women’s wrestling, a prep sport that has become increasingly popular.

“I am happy to announce that MacMurray is reinstating the wrestling program,” said Athletic Director Justin Fuhler. “I am so pleased that our administration and Board of Trustees agreed to bring this sport back to MacMurray.”

The first step will be hiring a coach. In seeking a coach, MacMurray will get the help of the National Wrestling Coaches Association, which promotes the sport, runs a training academy for wrestling coaches and provides support to wrestling programs in hiring a coach. The announcement seeking a wrestling head coach will go out immediately, with the expectation that he or she will begin by February.

“Now the hard work starts, as we work to find a terrific coach to lead the program and work to build a top-notch wrestling facility that our wrestlers can be proud of,” said Fuhler. A wrestling practice room will be constructed in the Jenkins Education Complex, which houses the Highlander athletics teams. The new MacMurray wrestling squads will hold their meets in Wall Gymnasium, also located in Jenkins.

The resumption of the men’s squad is a return to one of the legendary sports at MacMurray. “We have a tremendous history that goes back to the 1960s,” said Fuhler. “Our wrestling program has produced All-Americans, national champions and helped to mold hundreds of young men into successful leaders.”

Heavyweight Bob Kellogg (pictured right, without headgear), a member of the MacMurray Athletics Hall of Fame, was the NCAA national champion his senior year in the 1966-67 season. He also took second place in the 1964-65 season, as did Hall of Famer Ron Otto in 1967-68 and Fred Wideman in 1975-76. The program also boasts two fourth- and sixth-place NCAA national wrestlers and scores of national tournament qualifiers and regional and district winners. The program ended at MacMurray 2007, as interest and support fell off.

Women’s wrestling, which became an Olympic sport in 2004, is among the fastest growing prep sports in the nation, growing from less than 1,000 wrestlers 12 years ago to more than 11,000 on 1,800 high school and college teams, according to the Coaches Association.

In some ways, launching women’s wrestling is a 21st century update of MacMurray’s past, said Fuhler. “When you look at MacMurray’s history as a women’s college,” he said. “I am glad that we are being proactive in adding this emerging sport that has so much room for growth.”

Castleton University to start wrestling next season

0

Castleton University in Castleton, Vermont, has announced plans to begin varsity wrestling in the 2016-2017 season. The coach will be long time Vermont high school coach Scott Legacy. Legacy will finish the season at Mount Anthony Union high school in Bennington before taking the reigns at Castleton. Legacy’s teams have won the last 27 straight Vermont state championships and have finished first and second in the New England championships eight times each. Castleton will join Norwich as the only two varsity collegiate wrestling teams in the state of Vermont. Read below for more from Castleton University Sports Information.

Scott Legacy Tapped to Start Castleton Wrestling Program

Dec 17, 2015
CASTLETON, Vt. – Castleton University Associate Dean for Athletics and Recreation, Deanna Tyson, is pleased to announce the hiring of Scott Legacy as the inaugural head coach of the Castleton Wrestling program, which will begin varsity competition in the fall of 2016.

“We’re thrilled to welcome Scott as the first wrestling coach at Castleton,” said Tyson. “He is a nationally recognized wrestling coach who knows the sport intimately and we’re excited to see the success he’ll have at the collegiate level.”

Legacy comes to Castleton following a Hall of Fame career as the wrestling coach at Mount Anthony Union High School in Bennington for the past 30 years. The 2014 USA Today National Coach of the Year and New England Wrestling Hall of Fame inductee created a dynasty at Mount Anthony, illustrated by his program’s 27 consecutive Vermont State Wrestling Championships.

During his tenure he amassed an impressive 654-35-2 overall record, including eight New England Champion teams and eight more which were runner-up. In the last five years alone he has won three New England Championships and finished second once. He also has had 15 teams ranked in the top-25 nationally.

“First of all I am truly honored to be given the opportunity to lead the new wrestling program from the ground up at Castleton University,” said Legacy. “I would like to thank President Wolk, Scott Dikeman and Deanna Tyson for creating the opportunity for student-athletes who want to wrestle in college. Especially those student-athletes from Vermont who want to stay close to home and be part of a University which is growing academically and athletically. Coaching in college is the next natural progression for me. My goal is to hopefully be an ambassador for Vermont Wrestling on the college level, while providing student-athletes with memories and a family-type atmosphere that Castleton already provides as one of the leading universities in Vermont.”

Legacy has shown the ability to develop wrestlers at all weight classes, with 168 individual Vermont State Champions – a national record for all high school coaches, and 84 All-American wrestlers. He has coached seven national champions, 28 New England Champions and has had three high school USA Team Members. One of his wrestlers has gone on to make the USA World Team and over 180 have competed at all levels of collegiate wrestling.

In addition to his coaching merits, Legacy has held numerous leadership positions within the wrestling community. He has served as the Cadet/Junior National Team Coach since 1990 and for the past 13 years has been a board member of the National High School Coaches Association since 2002. He has been the Vermont State Chairman for USA Wrestling for nearly 30 years and is the Co-President of Catamount Wrestling Club.

Legacy holds a bachelor’s degree from Oswego State and a Master of Education Degree in Athletic Administration from Endicott College. He was a three-time high school state champion in Vermont and a high school All-American. He recorded over 100 wins in college, while spending two years each at Morrisville State and Oswego. At Morrisville he was a Junior College National Qualifier and Region 3 Junior College Place winner. Legacy then was named team captain at Oswego, where he was a SUNYAC Place winner.

Legacy will coach his Mount Anthony team through the end of the season before turning his complete attention to Castleton wrestling.
