The Desert Duals took place Monday in Las Vegas. Notable results include St. John’s defeating #1 Wartburg. The match was tied at 15 going into heavyweight, and Wartburg’s John Helgerson was disqualified for an illegal slam to give six points and the 21-15 win to the Johnnies. St. John’s also defeated Coe 18-17 but lost 18-13 to Olivet.
A nice couple wins for St. Johns. They seem to be more geared to compete in duals. Besides the 49 pounder, they probably don’t have another AA in their lineup. That will be trouble for them to compete with the big dogs at the NCAA tourney.
i disagree. Chris Sandy, Matt Baarson, Matt Pfarr, Dustin Baxer, Tony Willeart all have good shots at AAing. sandy was ranked #1 for part of the year last year when he was at wartburg before they started kelly over him and baxter has AAed before. that said, sj got pretty lucky that helgerson slammed their heavyweight cuz i think 9 times outta 10 helgerson works sj’s heavyweight over and wartburg wins the dual
I also disagree with only one AA they have multipe people that can AA like jcurl stated, but also agree I do not think St. Johns will beat Wartburg again. A bigger question is how will seedings fall out at National Duals now? Does Augsburg jump to 1 with everyone back in line up or do you give it to St. Johns? Keep in check St. Johns did not wrestle Batsukuh at 49 against Olivet and even a decision by him gives St. Johns the win
