Jacob Reed

The 2022 d3wrestle.com Freshman of the Year is Jacob Reed of Ohio Northern. Reed finished in 3rd place at 141 lbs. at the NCAA Championships. He was the highest finisher among freshmen and the only freshman to finish in the top five in his weight class. Reed began his college career with a win at the season-opening Mount Union Invitational and build off his great start all the way until March. He was victorious at the Ohio Northern Invitational and the Wilkes Invitational and placed 2nd at Manchester and 7th at Wheaton. He started the postseason with a runner-up finish at the Central Region to earn his spot in Iowa where he went 5-1 to finish in 3rd place.

Reed finished the season with a 43-5 record. Three of those losses, including each of his losses in the regional and national tournaments were to the eventual NCAA champion Jordin James. He avenged one of his other losses in the regional semifinal to punch his ticket to his first NCAA Championships. Reed came to Ohio Northern from Lancaster High School in Ohio. Last season, he finished in 4th place in the Ohio Division I state tournament. He was a 4x state qualifier, though the 2020 tournament was canceled due to COVID-19.
