d3wrestle.com Ranking #11 – March 5, 2013
Even though this is a weight without a clear cut favorite for most of the season, things still managed to get even more jumbled after the Regional tournaments. #1 Giorgio and #2 Bewak both went down but at least still managed to qualify. The top five in the rankings are all from the eastern half of the country, and #1 Gomez has wins over #2 Giorgio, #3 Frankel, #8 Camacho and #10 Ellis to go along with an undefeated record against DIII 125 lb. wrestlers this year. Giorgio is the highest returning finisher after a 4th place finish a year ago, but the fact that he only made 125 twice before the regional may leave questions about his effectiveness with a day two weigh in looming. The 6th, 7th, and 8th finishers from last year are also back. Gotto is a bit of a surprise as he took some tough losses this year and also seemed to have lost the starting spot at one point, yet here he is looking for another spot on the podium. Bewak, who was 7th last year, spent a chunk of the year at #1 before Giorgio dropped to the weight, and he could not regain the #1 spot after taking a Regional loss to Donaldson for the first time in five career matches against him. Frankel was the 8th place finisher a year ago, and he comes in at #3 after winning that same Regional with a dramatic win over Donaldson in the finals. Others to watch include #7 Preston, who has been much better in the second half than the first, the talented, if sometimes inconsistent Camacho, and #6 Ambrocio, who has not lost since December 16th.

Venicia (Elmhurst) may surprise some. If he’s at his best, he will be AA!

What happened to Scholten? He jumped up to 133 the week of Regionals.
not that im trying to correct u in any way, but i believe ur incorrect with gomez beating bewak, i believe bewak beat gomez , perhaps u meant to write that he has a win over giorgio?? if im not mistaken bewak only has 1 loss this yr to a div3 opponent & that was last week in the regional semis against donaldson from ursonus i believe..

Bewak did not beat Gomez
and where & wen may i ask did gomez beat mr. bewak?
He never said Gomez beat Bewak? Where do you get that from?
This weight class is a real toss up!
andys article originally stated that gomez had wins over bewak, frankel, & camacho… all i was asking ANDY was wen & where did that win take place, but as i can see andy has now changed that to a win over giorgio, which is wat i was referring to was perhaps his mistake.. ty andy 4 correcting ur mistake.. i appreciate it..should have directed my statement towards andy, i can see how it may have sounded as if i was talking to mike c.

GOMEZ x2 @ 125 and 133. Go Bombers!
What was the thinking to place Donaldson in his bracket spot?
@scott.. apparently none at all (lol).. how do u place giorgio who finished the yr as the #2 wrestler in the country against donaldson who finished the yr as the #4 wrestler in the counrty against each other out of a pigtail.. also if u look at the bracket carefully if donaldson wins that match he falls to the bottom part of the bracket, which would put all 3 wrestlers from the east region that being bewak, frankel, & donaldson on the bottom 1/2 of the bracket.. out of all the weight classes that i observered, in my humble opinion they really screwed up at the 125lb bracket, very poorly i might add.. giorgio & donaldson both didnt get seeded yet were both in the top 4 in the country… no disrespect to paul bewak, but he finished 3rd in his region, yet 4 some reason it didnt effect his seed at all, as he still ended up as the overall #3 seed…how does that happen. he got seeded better then frankel who finished 1st in his region & donaldson who finished 2nd at the very same region..also how does a kid who ended his season with a 16-11 record not have to wrestle out of a pigtail? yet a kid who finished his season with 33 wins ends up out of a pigtail (lol) CRAPPY SEEDING ALL TOGETHER AT THIS WEIGHT IN MY HUMBLE OPINION..
also 2 add 2 my above statement, i would like 2 also question how in the world does the # 1 seed gomez who beats the #1 kid in the nation, that being giorgio end up with a 1st round oppenent of mike fuenffinger? the kid earns the #1 spot & he gets rewarded with FUENFFINGER?? why not have the #1 seed wrestle the kid with the worst record in the bracket or at least have him wrestle the kid with the worst record who finished 3rd in his region at least (that would be fair) TOTAL BRAIN FART BY THE COMMITTEE.. POLITICS AGAIN IS WAT KILLS MOST SPORTS.. INCLUDING OURS… SAD 🙁
How can our sport’s leaders walk off the mat holding their head high that they have done their best. The fans know the difference. We are disappointed.
The tournament was seeded, they made sure guys from the same region didn’t meet in round 1 and then drew the guys in randomly like any other tournament. You can take issue with the seeding if you like, but if someone isn’t seeded, he’s going to wrestle a seeded guy. That’s the way wrestling tournaments work and always have. These complaints are baseless.
@av.. ur entitled 2 ur opinion as am i with all do respect.. having been on a seeding committee many many times i can assure u that ur opinion about how the tournament is seeded is based of of just that (an opinion) which by the way is COMPLETELY WITHOUT WARRRANT.. that is NOT HOW THE BRACKET GETS SEEDED.. ur WRONG..
and 4 the record av, this is not just ur ordinary average joe wrestling tourny.. tjis is the NCAA TOURNY.. the hole point about this particular weight class was basically that 2 kids that were worthy of being seeded in that top 8 simply put (WERE NOT) if wat ur telling me as a wrestling fan that neither giorgio or donaldson were worthy of the top 8 seed, well then i would strongly disagree with u.. i nderstand after the seeding of the top 8 that the rest is a random draw.. the problem that i think i have & most would have would be that 2 top 5 guys all yr long in giorgio & donaldson didnt make that top 8 seed.. plz explaind if u would in ur opinion why neother of these wrestlers would be worthy of a top 8 seed plz sir..
Seeding process at the NCAA DIII tournament is as follows:
2 coaches from each conference rank the top ten at each weight with a point value assigned to each seed (10 for 1st, 9 for 2nd, down to 1 for 10th). The high and low vote for each wrestler is thrown out and the rest totaled. 18 people seed, so the maximum score is 160. If two wrestlers are within ten points, they are discussed during the seeding conference call. Then, the wrestling committee finalizes the seeds and the brackets are generated. If a wrestler did not get a top 8 seed, it is because the 18 member seeding committee made up of coaches across the country did not feel a wrestler deserved it. Rankings do not matter and the committee is instructed not to use rankings as they make their choices. As I said before, you can have the opinion that a wrestler should or shouldn’t have been seeded, but the process is as I have described here, and the brackets are generated in the way I stated earlier. This is not an opinion; it’s the way that it is done.
giorgio 4th place at last yrs ncaa tourny.. highest placer out of all the wreslters in this weight, yet he waseent worthy of a top 8 in the coaches opinion huh??? (lol) yea ok
funny, cause last i checked giorgio in the last coaches poll was #1 at 125lbs.. hmmmmm
he also finished higher in his region then paul bewak did, yet in the coaches opinion he was more worthy of a #3 then giorgio was in being somewhere in there top 8?? (lol) very laughable
I now have awareness of the thought process.
Is there room for improvement – should we just accept that the mechical techniques used to fill in the brackets passes the test of reasonableness –
Thanks for the discussion
this is the reason why i no longer am on the committee cause of things such as this that seem to occur all the time.., i dont have a dog in this fight, but i love the sport & very much dislike wen i see things such as this happen to any wreslter… i happen to know about 12 of those 18 wreslters on a very personal level at the 125lb class &in my humble opinion i think many in this weight class were seeded wrong
Giorgio is the #2 seed. What in the world are you talking about?
the bracket that im looking at has him wrestling out of the pigtail againts kid from ursinus.. if im wrong then i stand corrected then sir
looks as if the winner of georgio & donaldson will become the 2 seed yes
it appears that balsiger is wrestling page in a pigtail & georgio is wrestling donaldson out of a pigtail.. maybe im lookig at something wrong perhaps
Giorgio is the #2 seed. He drew one of the randomly assigned preliminary matches. He will wrestle Donaldson from Ursinus.
@av.. heres wat i see on my bracket sir.. donaldson vs geogio to go to bottom of 28 to wrestle spearman.. page vs balsiger to the bottom of 23 to wrestle ambrocio.. am i not seeing it correctly?
in other words donaldsons win over bewak & then frankels win over donaldson basically meant nothing… cause bewak still got seeded over both of them & all 3 are on the same side of the bracket then
i looked at every bracket carefully with all do respect sir & not 1 bracket has all 3 guys form the same region on the same side of the bracket. with the exception of the 125lb bracket where bewak donaldson & frankel are on the bottom 1/2 of the bracket
165 has all three Mideast wrestlers on the same side. 174 has all three Midwest wrestlers on the same side. 197 has all three Northeast wrestlers on the same side and all three East wrestlers on the same side. Please stop. Your guy didn’t get seeded and you disagree with that. That’s fine. There is no conspiracy and there is no bracketing problem.
actually av as i said b4 i have no dog in this fight.. believe me or not i really dont care wat u think.. really i dont.. i will continue 2 share my opionins weather u agree with me or not kind sir.. if u choose not 2 reply, then by all means dont.. but plz dont treat me as a child by asking me to stop sharing my opinions ok.. how u understand kind sir that i never once said there was any conspriacy going on here.. perhaps thats ur guilty conscience coming into play kind sir
i will however admit that i didnt see those other brackets as u so kindly pointed out & im man enough to admit wen im wrong, & in this case i stand corrected in that i did not see those others… plz dont turn my words around av.. ive been respectful to everyone here on this site & i will continue to do so.. last i checked theres a 1st amendment right which gives me the right to offer an opinion ok. thats all i did av.. like it or not..
congrads Chris – match 1
NCAA may want to consider the region earned placement as the significant factor for creating the brackets..
@av mr. commitee member.. hate to b the bearer of bad news, but remember i said in my humble opinion u all did a terrible job at seeding the 125lb division.. well fyi look at the #2 georgio #3 bewak #5 ambrcio & #6 frankel… all out of the tourny on the 1st day.. kinda speaks volumes dont it.. also u had 4 returning all americans from last yr all on the bottom 1/2 of the bracket.. bewak, gotto, frankel, & georgio all on the bottom 1/2… hmmmm but in ur opinion u guys did a terrific job (lol) guess we cab agree to disagree on the opinion.. 🙂
congrats to gomez, camacho, balsiger, venecia, ellis, gotto donaldson, fuenffinger.. all u guys worked ur tails off to become all americans… great job.. its been an honer to have some of u in my room over the yrs.. very proud of all of u.. 🙂 🙂 🙂
