Several wrestlers with Division III histories placed at the Bill Farrell International in freestyle this past weekend. Michael Tortorice qualified for the world team trials with a second place finish. Former Greco-Roman world team member Joe Rau also finished second in his weight class in freestyle to also earn a spot in the trials.
Michael Tortorice, UW-Whitewater, 2nd at 57kg
Elroy Perkin, UW-Whitewater, 3rd at 70kg
Owen Webster, one year at Augsburg before transferring to Minnesota, 2nd at 86kg
Josef Rau, Elmhurst, 2nd at 92kg
The top-placing medalist at each weight who had not already qualified eared a spot in next month’s world team trials. Since Zane Richards, the champion at 57kg and Michael Macchiavello, the champion at 97kg, have already qualified, runners-up Tortorice and Rau got the spots at their weights.
226 athletes are now qualified for the trials across freestyle, Greco-Roman, and women’s wrestling. Here are those who have wrestled in Division III. The top three finishers from the 2022 NCAA DIII Championships are eligible to enter the Greco-Roman trials but must indicate their interest to USA Wrestling ahead of time.
