A 1972 graduate of Wabash College, Dr. Don Shelbourne has spent a lifetime supporting college athletics.

Shelbourne was captain and Most Valuable Wrestler for the Little Giant wrestling team during his junior and senior seasons at Wabash. He was the GLCA champion in 1970 and 1971, finishing his career with a record of 55-11-3 with 31 falls. Shelbourne received and NCAA Post-Graduate Scholarship as a senior. He was also an accomplished football player at Wabash, earning First Team All-Indiana Collegiate Conference and First Team Academic All-America College Division honors as a defensive tackle.

After graduating from Wabash, Shelbourne attended Indiana University School of Medicine. He has served as the team physician and orthopedic surgeon for the Indianapolis Colts, Purdue Boilermakers, and Wabash College. Shelbourne was the team physician at the 1990 and 1997 NFL Pro Bowls and was named Chief Medical Officer of the wrestling venue at the 10th Pan-Am Games in Indianapolis.

Shelbourne is a member of the Indiana Wrestling Hall of Fame and the Wabash College Athletics Hall of Fame. He received the Indiana Football Coaches Association President’s Aware in 1984 and the Distinguished Service Award at the Indiana All-Star Football Game in 1988.  He received the National Association of Wabash Men Alumni Award of Merit in 1997 and an Honorary Doctor of Science Degree from Wabash in 2001. He is a member of the American College of Sports Medicine, the American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine, and the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons. Shelbourne serves as an associate clinical professor in the department of orthopaedic surgery at the Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis.

Shelbourne and his staff at the Shelbourne Knee Center in Indianapolis currently serve as the orthopedic specialists to Wabash, Purdue, and Cathedral High School.

Shelbourne has made numerous financial contributions to Wabash College, both in the service of athletics and in general giving to the College. Shelbourne helped create the Max Servies Wrestling Room at Wabash to honor his former college coach. Shelbourne’s gift of $1 million helped create the Shelbourne Sports Medicine Training Room of Mackey Arena at Purdue University.
