Season outlook:
Fresh off its fourth PAC title over the past five seasons, the Waynesburg University wrestling team will feature a lot of new faces this winter. The Yellow Jackets must replace starters at 141, 157, 174 and 184 pounds this year and are expected to feature some intense battles for almost every other weight class.
One of the few safe bets in terms of returning starters is standout senior 149-pounder Luke Lohr, who is coming off his second-straight trip to nationals. The three-time PAC champion boasts a 79-18 overall career record and placed seventh in the country at the 2013 national championships.
Sophomore Filippo Crivelli also returns after winning the 133-pound PAC crown as a freshman last year and going 24-20 overall. Senior Sam Guidi, who won a regional title and qualified for the national championships as a sophomore, went 28-11 last year at 165 pounds, but was upset at regionals and missed out on last year’s national championship tournament.
The Yellow Jackets also bring back returning starters Gordan Bieber (Jr., 125), Patrick Jennings (Sr., 197) and Greg Kumer (Jr., 285), but they could face some serious competition from members of this year’s outstanding recruiting class. Bieber will be pushed by redshirt transfer Zach Swarrow, who spent a year at Division II Pitt Johnstown, and true freshman Tristan Buxton. Jennings is expecting to drop down to 184 pounds for his senior season, which leaves sophomore transfer Cody Klempay, who was a starting heavyweight at the University of North Carolina, to push for the job. Klempay may also wrestle heavyweight. If so, senior Gennaro Bonaventura could be the man for the job at 197. Speaking of heavyweights, returning PAC champion Greg Kumer is coming off a solid 25-16 season in his first year as a starter. However, this year’s incoming class could feature as many as three heavyweights, including Maryland prep standout Shane Lowman.
The two lead candidates for the 141-pound job appear to be sophomore Dom Ciaramella and freshman DJ Grindel. Ciaramella went 11-8 overall last year. Grindel is a three-time Maryland state qualifier who placed fourth as a senior. Senior Shane Foster returns at 157 pounds and looks like a favorite to start after backing up former four-year starter Sam Lombardo. However, he will be pushed by Landon Lohr, among others, for the position. When it comes to the starting 174-pound job, sophomore transfer Ryan Shank, who was an NAIA national qualifier at Lindsey Wilson, is a leader for the position.
