Athletics: Daniel Webster To Add Women’s Ice Hockey, Wrestling, Elevate Men’s Ice Hockey

Nashua, NH – Daniel Webster College (DWC) announced today that it will add three NCAA varsity athletics programs including women’s ice hockey, wrestling, and the elevation of the men’s ice hockey ACHA program to varsity status. All three programs will begin intercollegiate competition during the 2014-15 academic year.

“This is an exciting moment in the history of Daniel Webster College,” said Dr. Michael Diffily, president of DWC. “The addition of these three varsity programs exemplifies the college’s continued commitment to athletics and provides additional opportunities for student-athletes to compete at the NCAA level.”

These three new programs bring DWC’s athletics sponsorship to 17 and is the largest expansion of athletics programs since the college added field hockey, women’s lacrosse, men’s golf and men’s volleyball in 2008-09.

“This is a major milestone for Eagles athletics,” added DWC Director of Athletics Chris Gilmore. “We look forward to welcoming additional students to our college community in the coming years.” In keeping with the NCAA Division III philosophy, “we also expect our programs to strike the right balance between being competitive in conference championships and academically competitive in the classroom,” Gilmore said.

Women’s ice hockey and men’s ice hockey will compete as NCAA Division III independents next season and will seek affiliations within the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) for the following year. The wresting program will begin as an independent while seeking conference affiliation for the following season.

Daniel Webster College will focus on hiring full-time head coaches for all three programs in the coming weeks.
