Dustin Baynes to Coach MSJ

The College of Mount St. Joseph has announced the hiring of Dustin Baynes as their new Head Wrestling Coach. Baynes replaces Casey Brewster who led the team during the 2012-2013 season. Baynes comes from NAIA Waldorf College where he had been the assistant men’s and head women’s coach until taking over the men’s team as head coach in January. Read below for more.

Mount hires Dustin Baynes as new Head Wrestling Coach

Dustin Baynes takes over for his first season as head coach of the Mount’s wrestling team for the 2013-2014 school year. Baynes, a Lakota East High School graduate (2002), was most recently the head wrestling coach at NAIA Waldorf College (Forest City, IA), where he directed the school’s program starting in January, 2013. He was the head women’s and assistant men’s wrestling coach at Waldorf College from October, 2010. Baynes also has college coaching experience at NCAA Division I Cleveland State University, where he was a graduate assistant wrestling coach from August, 2009 to October, 2010.

As the head women’s coach Baynes helped build the program from the beginning into a top-10 college program, and as a member of the men’s wrestling staff, both as an assistant and a head coach, he helped produce 21 NAIA national qualifiers as well as five NAIA All-Americans. Baynes also oversaw five of his student-athletes receive national scholar-athlete awards, including one of those wrestlers who was named to the National Wrestling Coaches Association All-Academic team.

Baynes has a bachelor of science degree in physical education (2009) from Limestone College in Gaffney, SC; and has completed 24 hours of coursework toward a master’s of education degree in secondary health education from Cleveland State University.

The Lions’ first-year coach has also been a clinician at the Cleveland State University wrestling camps, a camp counselor at Carl Poff’s T-N-T Wrestling Camps, and also an assistant wrestling coach at Lakota East High School.

In addition, Baynes has been a volunteer coach for various youth wrestling teams, was on his college’s wrestling team for four seasons, was on the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) while in college, was a three-time team captain in college, and was on his high school’s wrestling team.
