Wrestling: NU alum Whitney ‘08 named new head coach

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Norwich University Athletic Director Tony Mariano announced early last week that NU alum Alex Whitney ’08 has been elevated to head coach of the Cadet wrestling program after serving as the assistant the last four seasons.

“Alex Whitney has done an outstanding job as our assistant wrestling coach for the past few years and will bring a great deal of enthusiasm, energy and passion to the Norwich Wrestling Program,” Mariano said. “As a Norwich alum, he is committed to the University and our student athletes in this program and I am very confident that he will lead NU wrestling to new heights.”

Whitney takes over for John Hartupee who served as the head coach the last two seasons and compiled a 3-22 dual meet record.

“I am excited to have the opportunity to coach current and future Norwich Wrestlers,” Whitney said. “Norwich Wrestling has made me into who I am today, and I look forward to returning that gift and aiding the development of our nation’s next military and civilian leaders.”

Whitney acknowledged the task in front of him but he said he is confident the program is primed to turn the corner into a new chapter.

“In past years we have struggled with a young team thrown into varsity roles,” he said. “I am hoping to see a completely different team step out onto the mat this year. As head coach, I plan on restoring the style of tough hard-nosed wrestling that Norwich is known for.”

Whitney’s inaugural year at the helm of the program should be bolstered by the return of junior Anthony Joyce (Lincoln, R.I) who is coming off being named the team MVP and was the program’s first 20-match winner since 2008-09 last season as a sophomore.

“My goal for the 2012-2013 season is to finally come into our own,” Whitney said. “We have had talent on our team, but we have not been able to put things together. Focusing on individual technique development will be the key to building self confidence and finally let our talent show.”
