Auggies Win Four Weights at Open

The host Auggies took four of the Gold Division weight classes at the 2007 Auggie Open this past weekend.  Jason Adams and Lucas Murray shared the 141 lb. title, Willy Holst won at 149, and Quincy Osborn handled his two weight class jump well, winning the 157 class.  Also moving up a weight from last year Robbie Gotreau won for the hosts at 184.  It was a large tournament, with 25 weight classes contested in Gold, Silver, and Bronze divisions.  Over 20 teams sent athletes, and there was a large Unattached contingent as well, including 125 lb. champ Jayson Ness from Minnesota, who just last night wrestled in the NWCA All-Star Classic at the University of Oregon.  He was dominant with four falls in four matches.

Though #2 Wartburg and #3 UW-La Crosse had wrestlers in attendance, neither team sent their starters, as Wartburg was at the Kaufman Brand and UW-Lax competed at the Olivet College Duals.  These teams will cross paths again, as Wartburg takes on Augsburg February 2nd, a week after UW-La Crosse hosts the Auggies.  This is in addition to any matchups at the NWCA National Duals January 12-13.

In other finals, Trevor Franklin of Upper Iowa defeated Jeremiah Johnson 12-1 at 133.  Holst majored Derek Stolarzyk of Upper Iowa 10-0 while teammate Osborn slipped past UIU’s Travis Eggers 2-1.  Mitch Norton gave Upper Iowa another champ at 165, beating Augsburg’s Matt Curtis 6-4, and teammate Brady Hakeman kept it going at 174 with a 7-2 over Augsburg 184 National Qualifier George Lynaugh.  All-American Gotreau beat Jake Stevenson of Morningside at 184.  At 197, UIU and Augsburg had their hold on the championship matches halted by Wisconsin-Eau Claire’s Josh Holforty who stopped Aaron Young from ICC 6-2.  To finish off the Gold Division, Mike Freeman of Ellsworth Community College beat Seth McGregor of Ridgewater Community College at 285.

All in all, Augsburg and Upper Iowa combined to have 12 finalists, dominating the event.  Augsburg is back in action tomorrow at home against Division II Augustana College.
