MoTW: Auggie Brute-Adidas Open

This weekend will see the defending champion and #1 ranked Augsburg kick off their season by hosting the Auggie Brute-Adidas Open.  #2 Wartburg will have wrestlers in attendance, as will #3 UW-La Crosse.  It could be a stern test for some of the top wrestlers in the Midwest and all of Division III.  With Cornell sending wrestlers, that will make four teams in the top ten in attendance, though the makeup of each squad is unknown at this point.

As the top ranked Auggies begin their title defense, they will have a new look to their lineup with at least three former University of Minnesota wrestlers including Travis Lang at 133, Willy Holst at 149, and 2007 D3 champ Quincy Osborn at 157.  Lang was a 25 match winner for the Gophers, while Osborn qualified for the NCAA D1 championships.  Lang looks to fill the hole left by 2 time finalist Jafari Vanier, while Osborn steps up into the weight class vacated by national champion Jeremy Anderson.  Holt will fill the spot left by All-American Jared Evans.  With four returning All-Americans and promising newcomers, the Auggies will be tough to beat in 2007-2008.

If the teams involved all send their top wrestlers, ranked wrestlers could include at 125 #1 Seth Flodeen, #2 Chris Heilman, and #5 Rob Struthers; at 133 #4 Jacob Helvey, #5 Jordan Kolinsky, and #9 Nick Nothern; at 141 #2 Zach McKray, and #4 Dan Crone; at 149 #2 Jacob Naig, #3 Willy Holst, and #6 Dave Paramski; at 157 #1 Quincy Osborn, #2 Aaron Wernimont, and #3 Pat McCauley; at 174 #1 Josh Chelf; at 184 #1 Romeo Djoumessi and #2 Robert Gotreau; at 197 #1 TJ Miller and #3 Wally O’Connor; and at 285 #4 Brian Borchers and #7 Dan Laurent.  It seems unlikely that all of these wrestlers will be there, as Wartburg is splitting its team three ways, but the possibility remains for some excellent matchups.
