WAYNESBURG, Pa. – A black man fired as wrestling coach at Waynesburg University claims race influenced that decision and that the school also unfairly discriminated against his black recruits.

Charlie Heard, of Morgantown, W.Va., says he was fired after a year-and-a-half with the private university in January 2008 after he hit a 285-pound wrestler who allegedly assaulted him. Heard claims he acted in self-defense but wasn’t given a chance to explain his actions.

Heard says administrators took a dim view of black men he recruited to wrestle at the school, saying they were required to have better grades than other recruits.

The lawsuit was filed in federal court on Monday. The university 35 miles south of Pittsburgh did not immediately return a call for comment.
