The d3wrestle.com Wrestler of the Week is Jordan Newman of Whitewater. Newman placed 2nd at the Luther Open last weekend at 197 lbs. and picked up several big wins along the way. Wrestling out of the #2 seed, Newman started his day with a 44 second fall before moving on to face Steven Holloway of Iowa. Holloway spent much of last season as the starter at Iowa at 285 after an injury ended the original starter’s season. Newman collected a fall at 4:13 in the second period over the Hawkeye to make the semifinals, where he was set to face 2017 All-American Kyle Fank of Wartburg. Newman prevailed with a tight 2-1 decision. His day concluded with a loss in the finals to likely Iowa starter Jacob Warner, the #7 overall recruit in the class of 2017 according to FloWrestling and a Cadet World medalist. Newman also picked up a fall earlier in the week in the Warhawks season opening win against Oshkosh.
Newman, a senior from Blaine, Minnesota, is the defending NCAA Champion at 184 lbs. and is a two time All-American for Whitewater, finishing 8th in the 2015 championships at 174. He was 56-18 in his first three years of competition. With a 4-1 record last week, he picked up his 60th career win and is now 60-19. Newman and the rest of the Warhawks continue competing this week with a dual meet against WIAC foe Stevens Point on Thursday and a trip to the Concordia Open on Saturday.
